Does anyone know of a public weighbridge near Southampton that can weigh both axels seperatly as well as the total weight?

The nearest one to me "Yeomans" will only do total weight, so they say?

Hi Brian,

Best plan is to weigh van to get mass weight, then roll forwards/backwards leaving one axle on the weighbridge to get that axle weight...speaking nicely to weighbridge staff of course as they will need to write it down separately....and then do a bit of maths to get other axle weight. Any weighbridge should be able to do that, although as the mass weight comes out as a printout that maybe why they say they can't do it!!?

General thinking is that to weigh each axle individually will give incorrect weight as some weight from one axle will be transferred to other axle!

Sorry can't help with another weighbridge in Southampton area.

Good Luck

Tony

To improve the accuracy when weighing one axle, make sure the other one is only just off the weighbridge

When I weighed mine I was asked to roll off completely before coming back on to weigh the separate axle. Probably something to do with the scales resetting themselves? A bit like when you tried to weigh two people on public scales for just the insertion of one coin, the scales do not set themselves properly.

My local weighbridge, suggested that we do the 3 weights, total, front and then rear axle, and will give a combined printout with all the information on it.

Next time we are near total holiday mode I will be taking them up on it.

First of all a check of local authority website (look for the Trading Standards tab) should list all the Public Weighbridges for your county

Public Weighbridges are FREE and provided you go at 'off times' ie say Saturdays and Sundays you won't encounter VOSA who seem to think the weighbridge are for their use only

(I went to my nearest one on a Sunday morning and executed an entirely satisfactory DIY weigh )

On the one I used (Handcross West Sussex ) the weighbridge consists of a sinlgle weighcell about 1' wide stretching across the weighing area. You drive up to a pedestrian crossing type selection button . Press the START button and wait for the GREEN GO light to illuminate. Then drive as slow as possible (don't vary the speed) across the strip until both axles have cleared the weighstrip. The LED readout (at the end of the weighing area) gave Front Axcle, Rear Axle then the total of both. -very simple - I did mine 3 times to check the numbers and duly wrote them down

Finally there's always talk on this subject about 'getting a print out - do you think a French policemen is going to read said print out and say - "Oh thats OK - we don't need to weigh you " - or is he going to justify stopping you by insisting on using his weighbridge - and if so - why bother with the print out ??

Harry,

You keep repeating that but it is not true. *Some* public weighbridges may be free but not all are.

'Public Weighbridges' are not necessarily owned by Councils but may be owned by companies such as farms. scrap merchants, hauliers etc. Owners of weighbridges can apply to be certificated as 'Public Weighbridges' when they will have to comply with the regulations for them.

The Hampshire County Council website for instance refers to charges being made for weighing on a 'Public Weighbridge'.

Let's stick to the *facts*: know what I mean Harry? Very Happy

Harvey
