I have just bough an old 1993 Autosleeper Harmony. It has a flat screen DVB-T (is that right?) telly, which I think means it has a Freeview receiver built in and a Status "flying saucer" type aerial.
I was unable to get a signal at home on either digital (we don't get a digital signal) or analogue....which is a weak signal.
I took it away for our first trip and managed to get it to find all the digital stations, but no analogue.....not in a digi only area either. I still could not get a analogue signal. The digital stations just produced pixilated broken fixed pictures and virtually no sound.
Help!!!! My gut feeling is that it is the connection, but what would be the best course of action, please?
what make is it, have you got and read the manual about how to tune in both analog and digital.do you have a booster box , which I find is best turned off for digital. Have you tried the tv indoors. if it works connected to your home aerial then it must be the flying suacer jobby or a cable connection fault.
Two thoughts come to mind. First, and apologies if I'm asking the obvious, but does the TV have an analogue tuner? Secondly, were you in an area with a strong digital signal when you were away? The effects that you describe are certainly probably due to a poor signal but you can only be sure as to whether it is a connection problem or not if you know that you are receiving a strong signal. Also are you using a booster box of some kind? If not, that will have a big impact.
Hi Julie and welcome... well I'll have a punt at this one as it can be easy and or difficialt.. the aerial you have is not the best as I have one as well and its just a compromise and we have to live with what we have... the simple way forward is to check you have the aerial amplifier switched on, you'll see a red light on and make sure the other switch is in the "far" position. The analogue picture you should get as you say you are in a good analogue area... if you cant get anything at all I would suspect the aerial installation, do check your tv by putting it on your own home tv areial and check that as well, after making sure all the coax cables are pluged in at the tv and at the aerial amplifier you should get something... the dvt side will also be ok as long as you get a reasionable analogue picture.... (its a useful tool) thats the first process i would look at...
I don't have the handbook...it is a UMC TV and has a menu for :DTV
TV,AV, PAL, PC and something else.
The DTV setting tuned in stations (on First Time Installation setting)but they were unwatchable. The TV setting just said no signal
There is a booster box, but the connections are very tight in the cabinet (can't feel if they are good connections to the aerial or if the connections themselves ar OK though). I tried with the gain on high and off. The red light comes on. It does not show the model.
I don't know how good the signal was, but another motorhome and a caravan had pictures with no breaking up.
I did not think of trying it indoors. I will unscrew it and try it indoors later and hope I can get both analogue and a picture via Sky. Can't try Freeview as we don't receive it here yet!
Yes Julie... if you have pixialation... it shows that you have a very week signal, as long as your aerial amplifier is on thats fine, the aerial you have is not that good... as I have said.... other campers may well have had different kinds of aerials which will make a big difference..... your setting up is fine... most dtv tv's have the option of scanning both (first) the dvt and then you are asked to scan for analogue signals.. i still feel its the aerial and the poor aerial we have... but its a compromise... as you dont need to point the aerial in the correct direction... but those directional aerial are far better still....
Just tried to unscrew the bracket and I can't budge it.
I will have to try to get/make a very long extension cable to connect to the TV that has both Sky and analogue (I put the other one in myself and it is just a line from the Sky dish to a second box so won't help with analogue).
So, presuming it all works then, what are my options as the system in the van is either rubbish (OK people say they are a compromise, but they must work sometimes!) or broken somewhere.
Do you know of any reasonable "fixers" in the Norfolk area?
yes a compromise, you just have to be in a much stronger signal area compared with a directional aerial.... there have been several times where my tv signal has been very poor compared with other campers tv's simply they use much better directional aerials... so an up grade could well be a directional aerial.. sorry I'm not in the norfolk area...
Sorry to ask so many questions! Tents are/were my area....proper mountain tent so no use for a telly, so this is the height of luxury for me even if it is small and old.
If I find (and I think I will) that the aerial/Status sytem is broken an upgrade would be a good option rather than throwing money for a mend at a poorer system. Is there something (cheap) I can put in the same place or would I be better just attaching a new aerial and just either leaving the old cabling in place (but not connected to the TV obviously)?
