I have a Panasonic DMC TZ7 which is excellent, however they now do a ruggadised version, details below

The Panasonic DMC-FT2 is a heavy duty outdoor camera that also features image quality and functions that are found on top quality conventional models. It is also supplied with a protective silicone jacket.

14.1 Megapixels
The 14.1 effective megapixel allows for super sharp images that can be enlarged to poster size and beyond.

Outdoor Features
Two features make the most of the durability of this camera in outdoor situations:

Beach and Surf Mode – for bright, contrasty scenes
LED Light – ideal for shooting in dim conditions underwater

4.6x Optical Zoom and Intelligent Resolution Technology
The FT2 includes fine Leica DC optics which cover a zoom range of 28-128mm in 35mm terms. The wideangle part is especially useful for taking large subjects or groups at close range.
Intelligent Resolution Technology can increase the zoom range to 6x still with high image quality, plus Extra Optical Zoom uses just the central portion of the sensor to give 9.8x zoom range (up to 3 megapixel resolution).

Intelligent Auto
The DMC-FT2 uses iA (Intelligent Auto) technology for both still and video images. Technologies used are:

Power OIS (optical image stabilisation, for stills and video) – twice as effective as Mega OIS technology
Intelligent ISO Control – effectively fine tunes the camera sensitivity
Face Detection AF/AE – Keeps faces focused and well exposed. Also features Face Recognition
Intelligent Scene Selector – chooses from preset scene types for the best possible setup. Includes Sunset and Snorkelling modes

AF Tracking
Follows your subject around the frame and makes sure they stay in focus.
Happy Mode
Gives a bright colourful disposition to your images with bright and punchy colours.

HD Movie
Records movies in 720p resolution in either AVCHD Lite or Motion JPEG formats. As this camera has a HDMI output you can connect an optional cable and view images on any HD Ready TV. It is also Viera Link compatible, allowing you to use your Viera TV’s remote control to organise your playback.

I just bought a TZ9 from Curry's.
The pictures are sharper with less noise than on my Nikon D70 but it does look washed out in comparison. The pictures were much more colourful on the Nikon.

The image stabilisation is a very nice feature, however the autofocus is manic and I am sure that is going to take some getting used to.

Not a bad camera is my first impression though.

Thanks for all the recommendations Smile

Happy again and very surprised. Currys gave me a refund no questions asked. Miserable cow behind the counter though lol.

Will be ordering a TZ10 online for the same money.
