Or should that be good morning as it gone after midnight. Any way I'm Mark and the wife and I are in the process of buying our first motor home, an Autocruise Stargazer. I was looking round for insurance and stumbled over this web site. I was looking for advice re insurance, I have had a very wide range of quotes ranging between £250 to over £1000 any feedback re insurance would be appriciated.

PS to webmaster. I will let you have the details of our motorhome once we have tried it out and taken some pictures. Shocked

On the insurance side well all depends on what you intend to do with your motorhome, are you just using it as weekend vehicle / holidays etc or fulltiming on it ?

I can only comment on the fulltiming aspect as i recently got insurance for that, I went to two of the bigger insurance companies for motorhomers, Safeguard (Charles House, Low Lane, Horsforth, Leeds, LS18 5JA 0113 2581614 ) and Comfort (Comfort House, 8 Goresbrook Road, Dagenham, RM9 6UR 020 8984 0777) both were good although Safeguard wouldnt insure me if i hadnt got a UK postal address whereas Comfort were happy with a Forwarding/Care of address within UK

Good Luck with the quotes, any one else got any advice ??

Like you say Nuke. it's important to try and work out what you want the insurance to cover.
I would guess the quote for £1000 was from somewhere like Bakers.

What are you going to use the van for Mark, just UK, short holidays / weekends, or weeks away at one time [in which case you may also need to check your house cover] into Europe ? West or East? North Africa?
I also suggest that you stick with specialist Motorhome Insurance Dealers, [in the past I've had to explain the difference between high top camper and coachbuilt to the Caravan Club insurance contact. Confused

If you are thinking of joining one of the clubs, try them for insurance, also some Insurers give points for being Club members. Shield Direct used to, don't know if this is still the case.
We currently use MCIA who are easy to access over the net, they gave the best deal - for us - at renewal time this year.

PS to Mark, check that any recovery deal is right for your vehicle, apparently some of the firms won't take bigger, longer, heavier vehicles, although if the Stargazer is the one I think it is you're probably OK.

Thanks for the feedback. I have now been through all the insurance companies / brokers in the motor camping magazines I have to hand. At the moment Shield looks the most promising. I will be using my camper for holidays and long weekends in the UK. We will probally venture across the Channel some time next year, Nuke do you have a section on ferry prices yet?

Twooks, I quite agree with checking re recovery and vechicle size weight. I tried several of the specialist for a recovery package and some were inadequet for the size and weight of my camper, some of them did not even know what the limitations were and had to go and check.

Hi Challenger,
Cross Channel Ferry charges change daily, one well known booking agent is the MotorHome Ticket Club, the Caravan Club and the Camping & Caravan Club can normally get you good deals also. I get mine via Camping Cheques as I have found certainly over last three years they can match or better most so when I am buying the cheques I get the ferry tickets as well. It really is a matter of trawling all sources.

You didn't say how old you are - and it's not my business - but I'm old enough to qualify for Saga. My Stargazer won't arrive until March 2004 but so far they are offering me the best deal (I'm not on commission !) Smile

Thanks for the feedback. I am not quite old enough to use Saga and have gone with Shield Direct, too eary to tell how good they are. Smile

Dave, the wife and I looked over the latest Stargazer at the Great Malvern show and Autocruise have made quite a lot of changes (ours is 3 years old).

hi we have allway's got our insurance through the co-op known as c i s ,they say that ,it do'snt matter what the vechicle is that it is the price it is insured for that matter's even in the case of gas explosion(bottle ect)name expensive item's on home insurance ,premuim £360.00 fully comp ,protected no claim's(this is in birmingham parked on the road)
