If you saw Warehouse Express's balance sheet you'd never risk buying anything from them. They've gone for volume at very low margins and are losing over a million pounds a year at present.

Does anyone remember Digital Cameras Direct? They set the web on fire before going bust and leaving a lot of very dissatisfied clients!

There have been many others as well. The problem with selling branded goods on the web is that there is always someone who thinks that they can work on that little bit less, which will put them at the top of the price-comparison websites' lists. However, they eventually find that their very tight margin is simply too tight and all they need is a couple of bad months. Cash flow dries up and down they go!

I'd rather pay a little more and buy it from a reputable and well established dealer.

Such as? One of the most reputable and most established was A J Purdy (Canon, Nikon & Apple Mac Professional dealers) and they went bust a year or so ago.

The situation at Warehouse Express is no different from both Jessops & Cecil Jacobs a while ago, only difference is that their prices were/are a lot higher than Warehouse Express.

Just depends on how much money you want to lose doesn't it?

Pay with a credit card and let them worry.

Yes but if Jessops or Jacobs goes bust (unlikely for Jacobs by the way) you've already got your lens as you'd have bought it over the counter. If however your money is taken by a web dealer and they then go bust you've a huge problem and a very long wait!

Not everybody has a Jessops nearby and so not everybody buys over the counter. On the other hand not everybody buys from WE over the internet - they have a shop as well you know.

Yes well, that's pretty obvious but my point will be understood by most people, which is:

If you can get a reasonable deal over the counter, it's much less risky that buying online. WE's shop turnover by the way is a tiny fraction of their gross!

I'm happy to buy some things online but if the price isn't too far apart I much prefer going to a good retailer. To me it's no different from going to a good restaurant. Why would we choose to pay ten times the price that we can cook it for at home, or get in a cheap cafe? Because for some of us, sawing the last ha'penny in half comes second!

We're brainwashed into thinking that if we haven't paid the absolutely lowest price, that we've failed as a human being!

I had a chat recently with a guy was berating car dealers and said that he'd always go to one of those car supermarkets. Guess where he went for his demonstration drive and for brochures?
