Looking at the photograph its a pic of a little girl playing on her scooter in the park next to the beach and yet towering over her are some wheelie bins. I guess its a take on modern urban life
Not at all Jock. It was the regional heat of probably the biggest photographic competition in the world. I organised the local heat and turned into a great MHF weekend.
Thanks Stew, but I am still none the wiser as to the relevance of the wheelie bins in a winning photo.
It has been voted as a winner, and that was done democratically, but why the wheelie bins? Is it to do with colour, contrast, focus, etc, etc?
Cheers,
Jock.
Hi Jock, the photo was mine.
No offence taken. But here's the best I can do as an explanation.
I like taking photos but I'm afraid I've never been terribly interested in the technical aspects of photography. I mainly like to to record where I am and what I'm doing and also try to create what, to me, are interesting compositions which in some cases might give me ideas for a painting.
In this case the Photowalk rally that Stew organised seemed like a fun idea, meeting up with other MHF members, going for a walk, and as a bonus taking photos together. I have no pretensions, I just wanted an enjoyable weekend and I had one. If there had been more people present at the rally there would no doubt be a different winner of this heat.
Maybe it was my misinterpretation but these photowalks are organised around 'cities' so to some extent I assumed an urban theme was favoured, though we were on the outskirts of Cleethorpes. We all took many photos but had to submit one each to the Photowalk website. In many ways there were other photos of mine that I preferred but as I have no real idea of what criteria were to be used for judging I submitted the one that I felt was: simple; stressed a bleak but garish urban feature humanised by the presence of the child; had certain tensions, in the composition and in the clashing colours. I think those tensions maybe what makes it work for some people but not for others.
Thanks to Stew, Shona and family for hosting the rally, and to Mavis & Ray and Tina and Glenn for their great company. The photos were in many ways incidental.

You and me both Chris, and for the very same reasons.

That explains a lot Chris. Thank you for putting a perspective on it, and, for not taking offence, as none was by any means intended.
Congratulations on your win.
Cheers,
Jock.
