Hi We found most of the campsites along the St Tropez/Frejus area all have computers for internet access. You buy a card with a code on it. I think it was €5 for 20mins enough time to receive and reply to emails. Don't know about other areas.
The campsite "L'Arc en Ciel" at Enter Deux Guiers near Grenoble had a computer you could use for €1 for 20minutes. I am sure as Mike says there must be lots that have some form of internet access.
Cheers Sid

I suppose my problem is that I don't find it necessary to use the net whilst on holiday.
If i have need to contact family then I phone and we have made up a devicce to listen in to the handset so we are both listening/talking at the same time. Helps reduce phone time as we are not handing the phone to each other during the conversation, and of course whilst in France family phnes us back at the payboxes to reduce costs.
We use French campsite boks so don't need to go into the net to look up our next destination for a site.

Incidentally, had I wanted the info the Sonesta is looking for I would have gone to my local PC outlet for the information as it would be far easier to assimilate the answers in person rather than by this slow and cumbersome method.

Hi there Nobby, We all have our preferences don't we? I personally prefer to ask in a forum like this for answers to such questions, if I were absolutely desperate for an answer immediately and I needed an urgent, quick and more instant reply I would probably find a more responsive route to my questions but as it is, I am only at the stage of merely "thinking" about Internet connection and hopefully with the guidance of the kind people who post their knowledge and know how on here, combined with looking on the net and then maybe a visit to a specialist store, I will then benefit by sufficient info and answers in order to make a well informed decision. To be honest personal experience in my opinion is something I value far more than the opinion of a salesman, I always worry that they are just trying to clinch a sale and I would rather hear how others who have actually bought such things have found it to be. Just me though and we all think differently don't we? I would rather ask the advice of "real" customers before I buy and my hubby rarely purchases anything major without really looking into it first. In our small town we do not have a computer shop and only have one Curry's store that sells anything to do with PC's etc and to be honest we have never found they know that much about their products. So for me personally, I prefer to ask my questions on a forum such as this and so far I have been delighted with all the information I have received on here and as such I feel a lot more wised up on things. I am sorry to hear that you don't find the help that I have been given on here as useful and as efficient as I have found it to be and it's a shame you describe it as cumbersome. I personally have to disagree there Nobby and I have found the advice and help given to me to be wonderful and I have appreciated very much all the helpful and informative replies.

By the way Nobby there is no problem with you not having any need to use the net whilst on holiday. Some people will and others wont. I personally would find it very useful myself but I have no axe to grind with those that wouldn't, each to their own I say! If it suits you then that's fine but if it doesn't then that's fine too. Do what makes you happy I say - there are no hard and fast rules or no wrongs or rights ....... it's purely down to personal choice!

Sonesta

Hi Nobby

I do hope that your local PC outlet is "up to scratch" when it comes to knowledge and the ability to pass it on....there are some, but the majority (IMHO) have staff who may well be a whiz at the keyboard but fall short when it comes to communicating the knowledge. Also if they work in one of the bigger stores they are under pressure to sell you something .... often even if it is unsuitable for your needs.

The other thing that you may have forgotten is that there are always forum "lurkers" ...these are the folk who never post a question (maybe to shy?) but when a thread like this comes up they will be there reading away and assimilating the knowledge therein.....that is why when it comes to the technical side of anything, I for one, only post about things I do understand, and I hope that some of it will be useful to anyone reading the thread.

After reading your post I am left wondering "Am I wasting my time" Rolling Eyes

Maybe the forum would be better just turned over to idle chit chat and jokes....some days that is all there is anyway Laughing not that I mind ...It is all part of a Forum

Mike

P.S. Just thought of this.......The reason I enjoy trying to help is that the knowledge that I have helped someone ( at no real cost to myself) does give me a good feeling Wink so the benefits are a two way thing

We only have Pay-As-You-Go Mobile phones. They are used only for emergency and to connect to the internet to download and send emails. If our family wish to contact us they ring us or email us. We also sometimes send SMS (text) messages.

I have to agree with spykal. I have never been to a single Computer retail shop that knew or understood anything they were trying to sell. Shocked

Not at all saying that the info in here is no good or is wasted, merely saying that my preference would be elsewhere.

I happen to be lucky, perhaps, in that my local town has 4 pc shops and another a short ditance away has a very good local outlet.

I have been into PCs since 80 when my unit in the RAF was writing it's own programming on a MAC (but that's another story) and I carried it forward into my Ham Radio hobby on my boat. I have never bought a complete desk PC in my life but must admit to owning 4 laptops bought "as is". but I feel that the local outlet can often suggest things that are "coming along" and often have some "cheap" deals going as well.
As Sonesta says in effect "it's good we are all different"

Hi Nobby

With all that experience in Ham radio I am surprised that you have not tried Wireless ( WiFI) I would have thought it would be right up your street.

I am a bit dissapointed that you would rather go elsewhere for information but its a personnal choice I guess. There are, I am sure, some very clued up folk on here, who could if only they would share their knowledge, solve almost any technical problem.

I know that when I have asked for help from the forum, the answer has always come back very quickly and saved me endless time looking elsewhere. That is another reason that I do try to post information if I have it ....then I feel that I have contributed a bit back to the group.

Hi Mike,

I am one of those lurking in the background on this one.
I know very little about WiFi, although I have managed to install a simple setup at home.
My laptop is capable I know but the bit I can't get my head around yet is the how to find hotspots and how to pay bit. I am only interested in when I am in France, Spain and particularly Portugal.
I have got my GPRS sorted now and I am on a PAYG system with Vodafone.
I will keep lurking and learning, I hope. This is what this site is all about. If you have some knowledge, share it.
