Hi, can anyone help me,

I bought a 2002 Iveco Eurocargo but the problem is, when its been run for 5mins and gets warm it smokes AFTER acceration, or when pulling afay from a junction as though it is burning oil in the exhaust system,

Ive checked the turbo charger and theres no oil passing through..

Basically when warm you can push the throttle and let go then it will puff smoke out wen you let go of the throttle..

Also i dont know if this should be, but when stood in neutral and press the accelerator i doesnt seem to rev up?? i was told that this is how they should be but i'm not sure,. it seems to only rev to 2000rpm when stood,.

please help if possible,

regards Dave

You have been advised correctly the engine will not rev to the limit when stood, it needs a speed signal from the gearbox, this helps reduce smoke at MOT! Smile

IS the smoke blue or black? blue smoke could be lack of fuel, the fuel pre filter fitted behind the o/s/f wing can clog up.

Black smoke could be your exhaust brake operating or partially seized causing back pressure in the engine.

Is there oil in the air tanks? if the air drier cartridge is saturated this can pass oil directly into the silencer, this would be a result of the compressor passing oil. I hope this helps.

Hi another possibility is worn piston rings, only way to check this is a compression test.

ok, the smoke is blue,. and stinks of burning oil. I followed my father earlier and while doing 57 then dropping to a 30mph zone as the engine slows thats when it puffs out the blue smoke, basically after its had load and then backed off it smokes.

Wouldnt it smoke all the time at tickover if it was the rings? as it doesnt, after load then left to tick over it will smoke and then clear its self.

Blue smoke suggests lube oil.
Are you sure that the mileage is genuine?

Does it have the correct oil in it?

Usually if its the rings it will blow oil out of the crankcase vent, this could be piped into the inlet manifold, or just be a rubber pipe hanging down.

As you slow down you create a partial vacuum in the cylinders on the inlet stroke, this drags oil up past the rings and you get smoke. On tickover this oil will burn of and then it will stop smoking.

So blue smoke - definitely engine oil then.

As previously said, rings letting by would lead to high crankcase pressures etc. My guess would be a top end problem, is it smoking on over run? Is the problem worse on over run? If yes, I would be looking at valve stem seals.

i also thought the valve stem seals,
but in my experience when the seals have gone, they usually smoke as soon as you fire it up, but it dont,

its does smoke on over run, anyway the truck has gone back to where i bought it from and they are going to see if they can sort it.

Your right, when the engine has stopped the oil runs down the valve stem and either pools on top of the valve if its closed, or drips on top of the piston. Either way you get a stack of smoke on start up.
