Hi RockieRV,

I think it was Spykal mentioned soda crysals on here awhile ago, this is how i do it now

As soon as we have emptied the waste water, close the outlet, i throw about a cup full of soda crystals down the sink with some boiling water .drive for a few miles into layby let it out, close outlet put more soda and hot water in and leave it untill we are at home and get round to cleaning waste out properly whenever. It works.

Hi Jim
I've been in the biotech business for about 20 years and my speciality is fermentation. I found your link very interesting but I think generally this culture will only work for full timers?? I am not sure about the culture lasting for weeks if it is not fed and agitated. The building of vent tubes seems a little drastic as well, although of course correct, but I've not found any sort of vents on our RV tanks yet, maybe they are very well hidden.
I am sure that everyone suffers this problem at some time or another.
Nice tip Hymmi, do you never get smells now??

Hi Sharon

Never had a problems with smells fortuneatly. I always make sure plates etc contain no debris, if necessary wipe with kitchen towel, sometimes wondr why I wash them at all Exclamation I do not use soap in the sink as this can clog up the system, I put moisturisng creme bath (cheap supermarket own brand) in a liquid soap bottle and use this instead ( do this at home as a lot cheaper than liquid soap) Occasionally put some liquid clothes washing detergent and hot water into the tank and then add water, I then leave it until the next trip out. Otherwise I run cold water into the tank and let it out to flush it through. I have read ( I think on here) that some tanks do not have their outlet pipe at the bottom and so a sediment is left.

Hi kands,

Sorry i should have said, yes it works no smells.

I use Carapak products because they are enviromently friendly and they do a general cleaning product that has live bacteria in it and they say it stops those smells building up,i do use that, but when i haven't used it and we have had smells the soda stops it instantly.

My M/h is now my only vehicle and I drive it on all occasions, when not being used for camping I leave my dump valve open so that when dring along it acts like a venturie ( spelling?) and sucks air/gases from the tank and I now get no smells at all.

Can't help with getting rid of smells from sinks, but a tip we have picked up for cleaning the inside of our black water tanks, put commercialy frozen ice cubes down the loo just as you are going on a drive. The movement of the van causes the cubes to bash against the walls & dislodges any ....... Then be very careful when emptying!

Obviously only applies to fixed tanks!
