£5 per night.

Pic shows M4 J13 (before the changes) and the site of the Southern Motorhome Show at the top. The CL is marked with a red flag.

Mick

I used to leave my MH on the caravan site, I thought it was easier than constantly moving about, especially after a long day at work!!!

You could see about setting up out of the way at your worksite, but note that you can claim your income tax back on £35 per day whilst working away, but only £25 per day if staying on the company's site.

There are a few CC CL sites around Newbury, if you have autoroute on your pc, then there is a brilliant download, it may be on this site, but someone will be along shortly to post the link I'm sure. Until then, here is a starter:-

L.DEACON, RHODESIDE, CHAPEL LANE, CURRIDGE, NEWBURY RG18 9DX [Tel:~ 01635 200573] 1ac, el pts, open all year

Is it the same across Europe?

Hi Mick,

no it is not. Different policies apply regarding "Wild Camping", "Overnight Parking" (which includes sleeping in the van) and just ordinary parking.

"Wild Camping" with a motorhome is forbidden practically all over Europe. However the definition usually requires that you do more than just kipping on a car park. The authorities normally call it wild camping if you either pitch up something outside of your van (like chairs, BBQ, awning) or stay for more than one consecutive night.

Regarding "Overnight Parking" there are as many different rules as there are countries (and in some countries you even find local variations...), however all of them can basically be sorted into three groups. All of that is only valid of course if you do not violate any local restrictions (like a "No Overnight Parking" sign) or normal parking regulations:

1. Overnight Parking is not forbidden:
This applies to most EU member states except the ones mentioned in the other two groups. In Switzerland you will find variations from province ("canton") to province. In Norway there is no general ban, however along the main tourist routes local restrictions are abundant. About other non-EU-members I do not know.
In general you should always keep a low profile and in Scandinavia you should ask politely if there is an inhabited house closer than about 150 metres from your desired spot.

2. Overnight Parking is forbidden but frequently tolerated:
A strange concept for me as a German, but it exists. Examples are Greece and Spain. Should you do it there then you should however always keep a low profile and be aware that if the local plod does not tolerate they will usually fine you on the spot instead of just moving you on.

3. Overnight Parking is forbidden and not tolerated:
That is the case in Netherlands and Luxembourg. Also some provinces in Switzerland and Austria apply such policy. Especially the Austrian province Tyrol is notorious here!
In NL this is alleviated by the abundancy of camp sites and the fact that more and more local councils set up dedicated motorhome stopover sites. Usually marked with a motorhome icon, the words "Hier is mijn plekje" ("Here is my place") and probably a time limit.
In Luxembourg this is no problem as the country is so small and all it's neighbours are more motorhome-friendly.
Unfortunately meanwhile Germany's northernmost province, Schleswig-Holstein, has joined this club as well.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

By the way, I'm only about 45mins from Dover, so if anybody needs somewhere convenient to wild camp in return for a look at their van and a few tips, I would be happy to facilitate that

That's great - our local club will be passing through Dover at the weekend and we're looking for somewhere to stay - there'll be 12 of us in total, 10 American RVs and 2 A Classes - by the time we reach Dover we'll have lots of tanks to empty so maybe you could dig a hole for us before we arrive!
This is a great site with lots of friendly and helpful members all ready and willing to be of assistance.

forgive my ignorance, but when wild camping, how/where do you empty toilet and grey waste, and get fresh water?

Don't worry Tony, I've got a digger!

Thanks for all the info guys.....

I'll check out the camp sites around the area and see what kind of rates I can get.

Tigger, are you saying I can offset £35 per night if staying on a campsite? What about the mileage backwards and forwards at 25p per mile?

If I just choose a different "wild camp" all night, I guess I'd be limited on power, how long does it take to charge a leisure battery back up (HLAPOS?) or would a small generator be an option?

Am I crazy?

Hi steles,

well, in Germany, France, Italy and the Scandinavian countries there is a vast network of motorhome service points outside of camp sites, so no probs here.

In other countries (like UK for instance) I dump the toilet cassette into a public toilet (I have a Sog ventilation and do not use any chemicals, so it's just pure poo and pee and that belongs into the toilet anyway). Then I use the emptied toilet cassette to carry the grey water into the same public toilet. For fresh water we usually ask at the petrol station when refuelling. So far this has never been refused.

Every other week or so we do spend one or two nights on a camp site for doing some laundry. Then we also refill fresh and empty grey/black water before leaving.

Best Regards,
Gerhard
