The iPod itself has the software on board to turn the digital format into video and audio that we can see and hear.

Putting iPod files onto a memory stick is no good, as the Avtex TV will not read the format.

But - All the Avtex or any other TV needs to do is read the video and audio signals coming out of the iPod, it does not need to know anything about the source file.

IPod classic right? I have one of those and an (old) docking station with SVideo out and a line out. With the right leads you can connect that to any TV.

Yes.. I have a 500gb drive that I use... HOWEVER you need to format in FAT32 and many drives wont do that size.. Luckily my son's a bit more techie and pointed me at one of these..

Basically a samsung HDD that was for a promotion of Michael Jackson.. You can re-format it fully with a program off Samsung website... You need to have .xvid or .avi files

Shop about I paid £45

The best way to listen to music is not through the Avtex, but through your Cab/Hab speakers. You can buy a gismo that streams the music from your iPod via radio waves, just set the cab reciever to the same wave length and you are away. I have an Avtrex tv and it is great but not the best for music

Thank you everyone for this for this thread, I've now worked out how to watch movies (.avi files) from my portable hard drive ( 250G Western Digital portable drive from Tesco £34.99).

I wiped the disk then created a number of Fat32 partitions, the Avtex will now recognise the HDD just like a usb drive.

Each volume can be a maximum of 32G ( 32000mb), the largest size partition for the Fat32 system.

Instructions for formatting the drive can be found here

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3865&p_sid=vaOwD1ck&p_lva=1287&p_accessibili ty=0&p_redirect=&p_srch=1&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J 0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjEsMjEmcF9wcm9kcz0yMjgsMjE5JnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9Mi4yMTkmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1mYXQzMg%21%21&p_li=

I'm assuming that this will work for any HDD ???

It's very simple to do, I'm not that technical minded but the whole process has taken me about half an hour.

Good luck

Dan

The limitation has always been the reduced partiton size when using Fat 32... Thats why I was glad when I got that Samsung one and could format a full 500gb as Fat 32..

Been to poundland today and got a cheap ipod AV leads..

Guess what !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep, it dont work Sad

It works fine on audio output but the picture drops in and out every few seconds. Apparently the official Apple leads (£40!) have a built in chip that tells the ipod that it's official.. So you can do it that way but need to buy approved leads..

I tried a cheap cable with no luck. On fleabay, people selling these cheap cables do say it wont work with latest ipod firmware versions, affirming the post above that says apple have made it so cheap leads wont work.

You may have to buy an original cable

Hopefully this link works http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB129ZA/B?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MTM3NTAwMDE

Then get another lead to convert from RCA to 3.5mm jack AV input to use with 10 inch Avtex you have your eye on.

Then, it should work as its just a plain AV PAL signal coming out of your ipod, so the format the original file is saved in doesnt matter. Please put me right if this is incorrect, but I believe this is the case.

Hope this helps!

Sorry not been around to respond. The dog ate my laptop cable and I've been excommunicated for a week.

Thanks to Shane at Snellyvision who has been working his socks off to find a solution to this. My Av cables still have not arrived so I can't experiment with my TV at home.

Thanks also to A37 for the comprehensive post. I've got an external HD so am going to give creating some FAt partitions a go.

I've been looking at other makes of TV too. Nearly all state they are media players - but, when you dig a little deeper - none seem to be able to just plug in and play.

If all fails, I think we'll just buy some rewritable DVD's and copy the films/programmes from the laptop and play them in the DVD player of the TV.

Technology eh? Don't you just love it.

I may have a solution!

There is a small portable tv/dvd that will do the job (the manufacturer says), of being able to read movie files from removeable media.

The Oyds Terra is a 9 inch TV/DVD with USB and card reader. It will read various file formats as listed below from either USB memory stick, card reader or DVD.

Format: avi, mpg, vob

video codec: xvid, mpeg2, mpeg4

audio codec: mp2, mp3

Available from all good Odys stockists Smile

Just read through this thread after buying a cable from Amazon. iPOD VIDEO / HIFI CABLE, 3.5mm RCA to AUDIO VIDEO AV TV Cable for IPOD Video Photo Nano Mini.

AV input on the back of TV has six sockets. Which do I connect to? Do I just do the obvious and follow the colour code?

Jed
