help! my husband is a wheechair user and we are looking for an adapted motorhome - 2 berth, automatic for hand controls, swivel front seats and room for an electric scooter. we have seen some external storage units with hydraulic lifts for the scooter which would be ideal but apparently these are only suitable for some vehicles and not others.... we are visiting the NEC show on 12th October so would be able to get some idea there. Any ideas/help/info about who to talk to or where to look?????? As usual, we want to try to fit a quart into a pint pot on a limited budget - so here's hoping! thanks in advance

The NEC will be a good place to start.. BUT gather the information, take it away and do a bit of research before commiting to anything.

I'm not sure your going to find much in regard to actual conveted vehicles but at least you can look at vans and layouts etc.

The adaptions may be better sourced direct, I know from speaking to one of our club members who recently lost a leg that they seem to be able to adapt most vehicles and even make them compatiable for both the Disabled and non disabled driver. So it's not limited to who can drive it.

With scooters being placed on the rear end of vehicles, you do have to ensure that it's not going to overload the rear axle. Do some searches here on MHF and youll soon pick up some tips.

Dont build your hopes up that your going to find many already adapted vehicles as I dont think tey come along to often and even then it may not be one for you. Better to choose some makes and models you like and then look at the adaptions, seat swivel are standard on many vans but if not only cost about Ł100 each to do.
Towbars and scooter racks, again there are several companies who will do this. Some should be at the NEC.
This is one local company by use for adaptions..
http://www.sirusautomotive.co.uk/adaptations Jn 9 on the M6 so not to far from the NEC..

Good luck.. I just got some free tickets in the post off a competition, so will be there on Friday Smile

Ask about the cost of ordering a new van with the modifications specified in advance, compared with converting an existing van to your requirements.

i have no idea, but suspect that an aftermarket conversion would be hellish expensive, so a new bespoke one might actually be more "affordable".

Hi LauraCr.
I am not sure if you are aware but you may be entitled to buy a vehicle at Zero VAT. It depends on the disability, but I think your circumstances may qualify.
It will save quite a chunk and may make the slightly out of reach within your budget.
Good luck

I was about to say the same.
A friend managed to buy three successive RVs adapted for the needs of his disabled son tax free. All three were sold several years later at little or no loss.

This enabled his son to enjoy the outdoor benefits and the father to not lose too much in providing it.

Ray.

Hi,

I am not sure what sort of budget you are looking at but Nirvana Motorhomes (www.nirvanarv.com) have some good secondhand adapted motorhomes. Event homes in Scunthorpe http://www.eventhomesuk.com/ can build from new to your specifications. They don't come cheap but while you are looking at adapting which comes at a cost then it may be worth investigating if your budget is enough.

You do also need to be careful with dealerships as they are very good at point of sale telling you they can adapt this and that but when it comes down to it they are not always the best or most apllicable adaption to your need.

As regards a lift in and out then you should be looking at AMF bruns type lifts. They have a wide selection and will be well positioned to advice you. http://www.amf-bruns.co.uk/.

The best advice by far is to talk to as many disabled motorhomers and see what they do. Other than the forums probably the best generic place for this is at the Motorhome shows run by Warners. They have 100's of disabled people in the disabled section. Unfortunately the season has just finished do your opportunity is April at the Peterborough show.

Hope all this helps

Hi Laura

We bought an adapted m/home from Nirvana in Kent similar to this -

http://www.nirvanarv.com/application2/vehicledetailsale.asp?ProductID=249

We got it last year because Sue is a wheelchair user, it has a slightly different layout in that it has no rear facing seatwhich left room for a wardrobe. it also has a 3/4 bed over the cab and a large 'garage' under the double bed at the rear.

We live in Stocksbridge and you are more than welcome to come and have a look.
I'l get the kettle on.
