The OP said " I'm considering buying a 'bridge' camera" (or words to that effect.

Someone recommended Warehouse Express.

I said, if buying from Warehouse Express, make sure you use a credit card!

Now we all know that 'bridge' cameras are hundreds of pounds and certainly over £100, which is why I advised the OP to make sure that he used a credit card.

I think that's good advice and I'm unsure as to why you muddied the waters by banging on about purchases under £100, unless you just like arguing.

Anyway, I'm not, so toodle pip!

You used the word "never" and didn't qualify that you were talking about this instance only.

Not everybody rigidly associates the advice on one thread, only with that one thread and there are cases when "never" should not apply to debit cards.

I gave one instance when "never" to use a debit card is bad advice.

The poor OP wants to know about cameras, not how to pay for it.

I think we should have a new post re How to pay.

Then stanner and HF can argue it out in the comfort of their own post.

To be fair someone mentioned Warehouse Express as a good place to buy. I happen to know that the company is trading at a loss, so thought it worth mentioning that, to be sure of not losing out, he should make sure that, if he buys his £300 camera from them, he should use a credit card.

I think that's good advice and wasn't deviating or going off topic.

If someone asked about buying a motor-home from a dealer and you had knowledge that the dealer was in financial trouble I'm sure that you'd warn him to be careful! I know I would! Smile Smile

All cameras today are very good, however I would urge caution in buying a Bridge style camera if you are contemplating ANY action style piccies

Even the lower end DSLR style are affordable and very very good, I have used several different types and would reccommend for ease of use and overall performance

Canon EOS range 450D /550D etc etc

I hope it helps in some way

Regards

I looked at both the cameras mentioned by the OP but ended up with a Sony HX1

Hi

If its about the size of a full Digital SLR why not look at the 4:3 format digi SLR which are smaller but still have the interchangeable lenses, the Sony NEX range is small and with changeable lenses and is supposed to be very good.

I find a good camera shop is worth visiting, then you can just pay over the counter CASH if you like.

I bought a HS10 last year and am extremely impressed.
I has automatic settings as well as all the usual manual ones - and all work well.
The 30x zoom is spectacular - excellent quality and ranges from 24mm to 720mm equivalent 35mm focal lengths.
Image stabilisation is impressive - I have shots of small birds taken at the 720 zoom, hand held, which are sharp enough for cropping and large prints
It's perhaps a little heavy but I don't find that an issue.
Uses ordinary AA batteries - standard or rechargable - so running out of power is not such an issue as with others.
An excellent camera

One thing that I hate about nearly all compact cameras is the shutter lag, rendering them next to useless for action shots. Check it out before you buy.

I was looking for something smaller than my Nikon SLR and eventually bought a Panasonic lumix GF2 which has everything that I could possibly need in a manageable size and no shutter lag. Decent range of lenses. It is expensive but really nicely made and gets good reviews all around
