He told me to manually get hold of the throttle and rev the nuts off the genny for a few minutes and then to put the genny under load for a while as they like to be used with load apparently.I keep plugging in a 1000w heater now and again and leave that on for a while.No problems since.

Yes they hate being run without at least 25% load does all sorts of things if you don't.
