Thanks for the tips on ISO etc, I'll try to get my head around it next time I'm out.

What is this with the scratching of the gentlemans area, I've never seen a woman do it to themselves, I suppose it's because it's less crowded down there, Laughing Laughing Laughing

The French do seem to have a great deal of wonderful abandoned churches and interesting architectural buildings. The old abbey at Vauclair (Garmin gps 49.45306, 3.74333) is quite stunning and makes a good stopping off place en-route to other places.
Can you give a better location for the one at Clairmarais - will add it into our itinerary as we will be heading south out of Dunkerque mid November.

Hi Dave,

I'm afraid all I can tell you is it is on the D209 coming out of St Omer.

Best regards

Thanks Chris,

That is a good starting point. We would love to see it before any further decay sets in.

Hi Dave,

I feel that it has probably been in this condition for decades so I doubt it will deteriorate much more over the next decade!

Definitely organising a trip back with fellow photographers to get inside once I have spoken to the Mayor and shown him how we can give him a bit of history.

Best regards

Chris

Dave P

Look for "Le Nieppe" or "nieppe" on your map/Satnav.(on junc of D933/D209)

Travel North West towards Clairmarais.

You go through/skirt a Forest. The Ruined Church is on right between the two villages. The Grotto is virtually immediately opposite.

PS -I came across this after googling: it was a holiday blog from a cyclist written in 2004

"We enter the forest leading to Clairmarais and stop briefly on the edge of a granite Grotto deep in shade dedicated to "our lady of Lourdes". There are many visitors and we can see the flicker of hundreds of candles and other offerings. Oddly, the church dedicated to her, sits across the road in complete ruins."[I]

Hi All,

Thought this might help:

Travelling from St Omer the Church will be found on the left hand side. The only advice I can give is after we went past, leaving the Church still on our left, we came across a road sign pointing back the way we had come showing Clairmarias. So by implication the Church must be further on than the '2' on the map.

We did take a photo of the sign which I will check later to see if there is any additional information on it.

However, as mentioned before if you head out from St Omer you cannot miss this Church.

Hope that helps.

Best regards

Chris
