I am sure I read a posting about this in the last few days, but I cannot find it.
I have just had my Volvo XC60 re -mapped by Valve and I am so impressed that I wondered if I could have the same done to the MA. I do not know the difference between re- mapping and re chipping. I am sure someone will know if it is possible on a 2005 Mercedes Sprinter 416, and where I should take it to.
Yes you can, it's just a case of finding someone near you to do it, chipping is an add on box, mapping is taking out the ecu and altering the manufactures ecu program.Dennis
I had my old Sprinter based Hymer done at TB Turbo. Although they have gone under, one of their leading lights now operates in the Lancaster area. His name is Mark, operating as C&M Auto Services, Lancaster 01524 843721 - he should be able to helpo you out. Gets rave reviews in the Company Report section of the forums.
I have had my last 2 Peugeot Boxer X250 engines ecomanaged and the results have been amazing in fuel economy improvement and increase in BHP.
It costs me about £250 each time but worth it if you are keeping the vehicle for a number of years. Must tell the insurance company though of thsi fact as material and might invalidate the warranty on a new engine.
I had my 316cdi (2001) remapped at Mertech in Hull. Richard the guy there mapped my engine to exactly my needs. 3850 kg, allways fully loaded plus towing a Smart on the trailer.
The result was very good indeed, just short of 200bhp, loads of power and a fuel figure of 24mpg overall.
All in all well worth the 250 squids.

Cant see any problem in re-mapping a Sprintshift !! It is simply a robotised manual gearbox and clutch. In fact I would suggest re-mapping a Sprintshift would casue less problem,s than re-maping a fully manual version..
My reasoning being that the Sprintshift automatically matches engine revs to road speed so it removes the chance of clutch slip when changing gear, or unecessary clutch slip when pulling away from rest.
I have a Sprintshift and I am very pleased with it, ease of an auto but fuel economy of manual. (25 mpg with Autotrail Dakota MAM of 4000Kg)
I ask myself, if it is possible to chip or remap why didn't the manufacturer do this in the first place? I am suspicious that to do such things shortens the life of the engine/transmission?
A bit like F1 cars where they only turn the wick up when desperate!

The manufacturer has to compromise on a lot of things when they carry ouit engine mapping. They have to make various assumptions about vehicle loading, where they are likely to be used etc. Dont forget that many base vehicles used by MH makers are actually produced to be local delivery vans that may well be expected to do collosal mileages in a very short space of time.
They also need top be sure that the vehicles will meet VERY stringent emissions tests in order to meet current legislation etc etc They will therefore be mapped to run very lean to ensure that every atom of fuel is burnt.
A Motor homes use is very different from what white van man wants. For a start off a MH is nearly always running very close to its MAM (most delivery vans are not) etc
Re-mapping is quite a science these days so I would not be too worried about reliabilityn issues (unless you use a cowboy who doesnt really understand the science behind it)
Personally I am more than happy with the performance of my Sprinter based MH. I trundle along at 50 - 55 mph and get 25mpg. A bit more mpg would be nice but I have worked out how long it would take to re-coup the cost of a remap. I will never do enough miles. dont forget that the saving is ONLY the difference between what you get (mpg wise) before and after re-mapping multiplied by the total mileage covered.
For me it is just not cost effective to lash out £200, but others feel differently
