We have decided to move our MH from a Cassoa registered Gold storage site that is a 20mile round trip, to a new site that is opening less that a mile away. It's not Cassoa registered.

It got me thinking as to how much it will affect my insurance premium, and talking generally does storing a MH on a compound
really save people that much at the end of the day or is it just a price worth paying for peace of mind.

A non registereed site may have better security. It is a question of visiting and seeing for yourself.

I live 4 miles or so from a very secure caravan dealership that operate a storage site.
During summer there were several caravans entered and property stolen. Two being relatives of mine.

The round trip may be a pain but have there been any break ins.
Is it a price worth paying.

I store my van on a farm. It is quite isolated but the locals are a, thankfully, very nosey bunch.

When taking out insurance the lady kept pushing me to answer yes to flood lights, locked gates, etc.. The farm has a barrier but it's not really secure.

The rub is the difference in cost was quite small. So I said it had no barrier or security to take away any wriggle room on a claim.

I do have a tracker fitted.

Motorhomes are much less likely to be stolen than caravans as the base vehicles have good immobilisers. Without a key its is very difficult to steal a modern vehicle. They would probably have to trailer it away!

To be honest farmers get very protective about trespassers and tend to own shotguns. Most petty criminals stay away from where they stand out like sore thumbs or clay pigeons!!

When I checked with a few insurers, storage on a CASSOA or non-CASSOA registered site didn't make any difference. What they wanted to know was that there was CCTV, locked compound with secure perimeter fence and 24hr presence on site. It didn't affect the insurance premium : if I couldn't evidence this, they wouldn't provide cover full stop. Having the CASSOA registration is simply a convenient short-hand to convince the insurers it's secure.

The roundtrip is a pain especially at peak times. Yes we do know of one break into one of the caravans on the site. The caravan owner was asking if we had seen anything suspicious when visited the storage. He told us that the CCTV wasn't working in that area of the compound. There used to be a very large dog on site but it died and wasn't replaced. Then the site had problems with the automatic gates which lasted weeks and the gates couldn't be locked. We had to open / close by hand. We also noticed fewer vans on site but put that down to the recession.

Then my wife learned of the new storage place opening up on our doorstep and we were giving it great thought about moving. Then we paid a visit to our van and found we could not get on the site because the gates weren't working again. There was no one around, and the two emergency telephone number were both through to answer machines. Yes another wasted journey. My wife who has steadfastly wanted to keep the van at this facilties said Weare not paying £480 a year and then not being able to get into the site in the middle of the day. I think we should give the new storage place a try. Me, I'd park it in the street, at least it would get used more and that £480 would pay the annual insurance.

The main criteria for storage and insurance costs is the postcode of the facility.

You could move and either pay more or less insurance. If your neighbours will not object, get a quote for keeping it at home. That is by far the most convenient.

Mine is now on my drive and the cost of insurance has gone up by £14. It was stored at Discover Leisure but we all had to move out. It was a pretty basic storage area as regards security.

I've just been on the phone to Safegaurd regarding moving our MH off a Cassoa registered site to a Non registered site.

I was told that would be classified as "Private Premises" and would cost an addictional £20 for the period Feb 2011 - Sep 2011, but would be much more when I renew the policy in September 2011.

Does anyone who insures with Safegaurd and stores the MH on the drive at home know what their insurance classification is.

My son in law kept his caravan on what must be considered a very secure site. Two sets of gates, CCTV etc and yet his van was broken into and the awning stolen twice.
The site operator suggested it was fellow owners who used the site doing the thefts. He has moved to an alternative site with no problems so far.

We store our van at a Cassoa gold star site near preston. What we like about it that there's someone on site 24 hours a day. They get the van out for you and park it near water etc so you can 'play' in it or take it out so no-one else should be near it when its stored to break in.
It costs about £280 year.
They can also service it and do habitation checks on site, so t was very useful when our battery let us down.
