Test yours by moving the motorhome without telling anyone you are doing so. That is as long as it will not be immobilised by the tracker company!!
Obviously not working correctly if you are getting messages regarding other Mhomes.
I'd like to tell everyone about my experiences buying a tracker.
1. I went to the NEC Motorhome Show and picked the most expensive - £750 for a tracker with a lifetime with it being fitted at my house. The salesman was very positive and it would all be sorted out for me, they'd show me how it worked etc.
2. Some weeks later, I got an e mail saying I needed to call a fitter to arrange the fitting and what phone numbers did I want attached to it. This was confusing, but I gave mine and one other.
3. The fitter didn't come for weeks - he was busy and hard to pin down. I later found that he didn't work for the company, he was just a sub-contractor.
4. When the fitter came, he said that he couldn't show me how it worked, because it would take 48 hours to set up - there was something wrong with the SIM he said. He left me some long instructions in a very long booklet - well I think he did - I am organised but can't find them anywhere.
5. I drove the vehicle a week later and did not turn the switch to say it was me, but I was not notified that it was moved. I called the fitter and he said not to worry, it probably wasn't set up properly yet. Apparently I have to send some text messages or something to set it up. I didn't understand what I had to do.
6. Then later I started getting text messages saying that my vehicle was in Kent and moving. I contacted them and they said it must be in Kent. I said I could see it parked in London. They said, not to worry, they had probably set it up wrongly.
7. After many phonecalls, they said that they had adjusted the software and now it would be fine.
8. Then they said I could text my van and it would give the location. I did this a number of times and the location was wrong. (Although I subsequently find out, that's because I didn't know how to put the coordinates into Google maps properly).
9. Then I started getting texts again saying that it was moving in Kent. I called them again. They said that the fitter had wrongly set up my tracker and that he had to go to the other vehicle and change over SIMS. In the meantime, they were disabling the other tracker.
10. I went out to try my own vehicle and it did send me texts, but then the engine battery completely went (it seems that in the 2 weeks since I drove the van, it was completely drained - I can only think that this is due to the tracker's drain). The tracker then sent me a text to say that its power had been disconnected.
11. Having had the engine battery replaced, I tried my van. It did not send me texts to say it was being stoled, whatever I did. I called them and they said that I was probably "low on credit". This was news to me - I thought that £750 was an option for lifetime cover, instead of the alternative of £95 a year. He then said that this was for "tracking" - but that separately I apparently have some kind of Vodafone account and that it only comes with 10 texts, then I have to pay more money! I have no idea how one does this whatsoever.
Anyway, I have found:
(i) they didn't care about fitting it - only getting the money
(ii) they didn't care about explaining it - when I was promised this
(iii) it was set up wrongly and they were difficult whenever I called about this
(iv) when I called to ask why it wasn't working today, they were basically fed up of me calling and were really rude.
I would say - DO NOT DECIDE WHICH TRACKER TO BUY AT A SHOW - ASK FOR THE CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM, AND SPEAK TO THEM, AND SEE WHAT THEY ARE LIKE, BEFORE DECIDING.
In the interests of clarity, is it possible for you to name the company involved? It might help someone else avoid this company. On the other hand, it might help, or hinder, your efforts to get your own unit sorted out.
If you do feel able to mention the company, someone on here with the same unit may be able to offer constructive help.
It seem to be common that the problems relate to the commissioning of these things. We went to the experts - VanBitz - and they made sure that the tracker worked.
We did have an unrelated problem with the alarm and they sorted that out too - at no charge.
What is weird is that the name of the company which contacted me about the tracker is different to the name at the show - I think the name at the show is just like an agent selling it for someone else.
Also, the man fitting the tracker is not from the company, but a subcontractor who seems to have nothing to do with them either.
Also, the tracker itself is not supplied by the company, but by someone else.
So it's all bitty.
I'm driving my van now without turning off the switch, and it doesn't send me texts. The tracker is completely dud. I have no idea how to top up the Vodafone account at all. I have completely wasted £750. The company are not replying to e mails or texts.
If you paid be credit card or by visa debit then you probably have recourse to the card issuer in the event that you are unable to get a satisfactory resolution.
