Trying to access BBC iPlayer from Portugal. There is a site called Expat shields which allows a download giving you a UK ip address that states that you will then be able to use the iPlayer. Has anyone used this site?
Hi Ken.
Have tried this 'ExPat Shield' program but can't say it solved my problem.
Apart from being inundated with pop ups and adds, when I access the National Lottery site it still recognises I am outside the UK.
It was for this reason I tried ExPat Shield.
Although we have UK address and bank account, The National Lottery keeps telling me as we are outside the UK in the event of winning we might not get paid out.
Anyone else four a way round this please?
Ray.

We have used it a lot, see http://www.motorhomefacts.com/ftopict-111254-.html but recently in France it has worked for itvplayer but not bbc iplayer. I think the sites get wise to what is happening and block access. We might lose itvplayer next.
It opens up the adverts and what you want to watch in two separate instances, and you can switch off the advert one with a bit of practice. After you have used it, it configures your machine to use its search engine until next time you restart. As I mentioned in the other post you need to remove it from your startup programs and select it only when required.
Thanks for asking a question I can answer.. it doesn't happen often.
Brian

This post is almost a year old. We're using www.ukproxy.tv from the States for UK TV-watching, and it's 100% excellent with no adverts. We also tried the ex-pat facility but didn't get on with it.
You sign up and agree to pay €5 per month via PayPal. However, the first month is free, so they set up a PayPal standing order which doesn't start for a month. You're then issued with a log-in & password which pops up after you enter the proxy IP details into your browser (Tools >> Options >> Settings etc.) You only have to enter the IP details once - each time you want to watch UK TV / iPlayer etc, you choose the proxy setting by clicking one button, and your computer then has a UK IP address.
You can cancel the PayPal standing order at any time (I did immediately it was set up) and your login is supposed to expire after a month. That was 5 months ago...
As with any streaming, you just need a good WiFi signal, otherwise the programs buffer. That's not an issue with ukproxy.tv though.
Thanks Dougie.
I think I will ditch ExPat and try 'Proxy'.
It's not for TV as we get more than we want. But for the Lottery.
Thanks again Ray.

If it's just for the lottery and you say they have your UK bank account then can't you just keep and eye on the bank account instead?
If you win anything "life changing" you'd probably get the bank manager phoning your mobile desperately wanting to know if there is anything they can help you with "sir"
In respect of programmes you load onto your computer to "cloak" your locations, these cannot get around the problem that as soon as your internet request leaves the computer the ip will be changed to that of the local provider. So they're never going to work.
External proxy services where your internet request goes via a server in the country (UK) you're attempting to look like you're located are far more effective.

That's what I explained about ukproxy.tv above. It works, and very well (having just enjoyed tonight's Spooks here in California).
