Have you not tried 'find a campsite' see LHS of this site. Gaasper camping is there, perfect I would say.

We've used Gaasper Camping (http://www.gaaspercamping-amsterdam.nl) in high season (August).

It gets very busy then (like all Amsterdam sites), with the facilities only just coping (mainly tent campers).

However, the pitch we got was good and quiet, and being self-contained the overcrowding of the facilities didn't worry us. The overall site and setting was pretty good, just very busy whilst we were there.

Out of season, it is said to be much less crowded.

The big advantage is that it is a very short walk to the station at the end of the Amsterdam Metro, with trains until the early hours of the morning, which makes it very convenient for visiting the city.

I would recommend, especially if visiting the city is what you want.

thanks frank, i has seen that one and it looks great except from my reading you can only make a reservation for more than 7 nights, although i must admit the wording isnt exactly clear. this is from the web site

"Reservations can only be made for caravans and motorhomes with a stay of at least seven consecutive nights. In addition, reservations can be made for groups of forty or more persons.
Of course you are also more than welcome if you want to stay fewer than seven nights or are coming with a tent!"

My problem is that i need to be there at a very specific time so my other half can get a flight back to the uk for a wedding - that means I would feel a lot more comfortable if i could make an advanced booking, but i only want to stay for 4 days

I doubt they will be full.

We didn't book, but joined the queue to take up the spaces vacated by people leaving.

Had no trouble getting on under those circumstances.

There is a huge car park outside but don't be tempted to turn up in the middle of the night and hunker down to await the site gate opening. The car park is 'policed' and someone (perhaps the camp site owner on his bicycle) will be along at first light to politely tell you to move on. The police also used it late one night to marshall all the trafic off the motorway for some sort of search/inspection it was all quite exciting! Oh and by the way as well as the metro the night bus also stops there so you can stay up as late as Amsterdam does if you have the stamina. I must add that to the site information.
