Sorry to bring this up, but i was wondering if this issue was ever resolved? I found this thread on Google and am having similar issues with my Sprinter based MH.
I've been to Mercedes to discuss the problem and i have to bring the MH to them (easier said than done when it won't start!). Also the prices they were talking were phenomenal.
Thanks
Rob
Autostyle fixed my problems.
I sold the van about 6 months after.
I now run two other Sprinters. A 3 Litre V6 Manual and a 2.2 Litre True Automatic with Torque converter. No problems whatsoever with either.
Before I purchased the Auto. I spoke with Robert Williams of Robert Williams Trading Limited (Tel: 01706 212444) at great length regarding Sprinters and he brought the Subject of SprinShift up.
Robert tells me he almost only sells higher Mileage Sprinters over 200,000 miles and all under £10,000. Buyers tend to take them away and run them for another 50,000-100,000 miles and them bring them back to trade for another 200,000+ Mile vehicle.
This way the most they lose is around £8k as opposed to a massive chunk of depreciation in Sprinters that cost as much as £50,000.00.
However, he avoids SprintShifts as he has been plauged with problems with them.
Many SprintShift owners on here are very happy with theirs. That said, I would imagine most of these will have been driven sedatley and serviced well. Downside is, most motorhomes move around at near full payload or over it!.
I personally would not go near another SprintShift or its newly Branded VW version "ShiftMatic". I have also been put off any vehicle that has any kind of robotised gearbox.
Hope this helps?
You could always try mike at AutoStyle for help with your SprintShift Box poblem.
I was extremely happy with my Sprinter with Sprintshift, very relaxed driving, and one learned to mitigate the rather clunky downward shifts at low speed. It performed well even over Alpine passes until about 30000 miles when the sprintshift started playing up.
Once or twice it refused to go into neutral, I habitually park with it in gear, I've never trusted handbarkes since having an A35 then a Mini. Leaving it for an hour or so would usually persuade it to work again.
Then in one month it went to the main dealer 3 times courtesy of the RAC, each time it came out fixed ! The last time, it refused to go into first, just having left home after I'd stopped to cure the cupboard rattle leaving the engine running.
No faults on the computer, but new hydraulic pump, new connectors for the electrics etc etc
I've managed to get the start error fixed at last!! Touch wood it is all working and the guy said it shouldn't happen again. Anyway, the company was called Auto Locks (http://www.autolocks.biz/) if any one has a similar issue..
Chuffed as we're going away to Devon in a couple of weeks and i was resigning myself to paying Mercedes to fix it
