Hi,

I have a problem knowing what diffent types of sites there are in Europe, (France) Perhaps someone can explain the diferences

There appears to be

(1) Normal Sites like the UK ?

(2) Municipal ?? what are these ?

(3) Aires ?? Motorway ones ?? (Must be avoided Theft etc)

(4) Aires ?? In small towns/villages ??

(5) And places where you can empty/fill with water etc

(6) Etapes (people suggest i buy the Official etapes Guide for camping-cars) what are these

Am i correct ?? as this appears to be where the confusion is

any help would be appreciated

Brian

Hi Brian

(1) Normal Sites like the UK ?

Just your average commercial site AFAIK

(2) Municipal ?? what are these ?

Site run by the local authority (Mairie/council) in France, usually cheaper than comercial sites.

Sorry can't help with the others, don't use them

Do you have the Caravan Europe 1/2 book(s) published by the CC? It's one of many guides out there... one's enough for us

Keep getting this day jar view feeling Laughing

[quote="Enodreven"]Hi,

These are mainly commercial sites but range from large to one corner of a farmer's field

(2) Municipal ?? what are these ?
Owned and run by the local village or town. They range from quite basic, site yourself to quite big and organised. Generally we have found them very good and use them a lot.

(3) Aires ?? Motorway ones ?? (Must be avoided Theft etc)
Like motorway service stations in UK ( ie garage, restaurant etc) or aire de repos -areas on the motorway every 20 or so km where you can stop and picnic sometimes with loo and seating but often little else. Some people stay overnight with no problem, others have had thefts etc

(4) Aires ?? In small towns/villages ??
Again, usually set up by the municipality to encourage tourists. Vary from marked pitches with water, dump point etc to small corners of the sports field. Usually you can stay overnight but not always. Sometimes charged, often not.

(5) And places where you can empty/fill with water etc

Bornes etc where you can fill up with water, dump waste and sometimes recharge batteries. Sometimes you can stay overnight or even longer but not always. Some charge a few euros, others do not.

(6) Etapes (people suggest i buy the Official etapes Guide for camping-cars) what are these
A list of all above aires and bornes and some municipals in France and Europe. Available from French supermarkets or via Amazon France.

See the campsites section of MHF for better explanations and examples.

You've missed French Passion sites !

Brian

If you look down the LH side of the Home page there is access to a very good Guide to Aires which PeeJay put together some time ago.
