Hi Dave!

A most interesting read and reassuring to hear how much money you saved on the van - indeed a sound investment and a couple of years down the line, should you decide to swap it for another, you shouldn't have to burden significant depreciation.

I hope to write a similar guide myself once I've finally taken collection of my Rimor.

And hopefully it will be similarly straightforward!

customs often don't even stop you as you come in. i have imported twice from belgium.

if you haven't paid any vat then you have to pay 17.5% on the total price and you have to notify the vat man within a certain time. i think it's different if you buy from germany - i think you pay 16% when you buy. then you have to claim that back and pay 17.5% vat here. one of the reasons i chose belgium again.

it's best to get the import packs from DVLA & Customs. i just asked for them on their websites.

We also purchased a vehicle in Germany in October 2003. We went over on return flights having phoned a couple of people selling motorhomes which we got from mobile.de the day before. Worth noting that you should also insure the motorhome on the chasis number as the german export/insurance plates only cover third party. As we did not know whether we were going to buy or not, I called to the insurance office with a cheque for the require amount and told them that if i bought a motorhome I would ring them with the chasis number and they could set up a policy. This meant that a five minute phonecall from Germany and the motorhome was fully insured by us.

With regard to the transfer of money, things are probably different in Ireland but I went to my bank prior to travelling to Germany and lodged sufficient funds into my account to cover the cost of sale. I told them I would ring them around certain dates and they would transfer the money, as I did not have any idea whether or not I would be purchasing a motorhome I could not give any further details. All I needed from the vendor was an IBAN no. and the account number of the vendor. On the day of the purchase I phoned my bank and told them to transfer the funds, within 10 minutes the vendor had a fax confirming the transfer and the money was in his account within 2 hours.

We left Ireland on Tuesday morning and were back again with motorhome late Thursday night, we encountered no problems and every German person we met with regard to selling their motorhomes could not have been more helpful.
