Peugeot Compass Drifter 310 (Boxer based conversion with diesel engine).

I was driving along as normal, but noticed that the indicators suddenly stopped working and the temperature gauge and fuel gauge were dead. The headlights were still working OK, so it was still drivable. I immediately suspected an electrical fault and did not stop because being a desil engine it’ll keep running regardless of electrical feed. I arrived home and started to check out the vehicle. Checked the indicators by switching on the hazard warning lights, which was OK with no bulb fault.

I checked all the fuses and found that fuse F1 (10A rating) was blown. I replaced it but it keeps blowing when the ignition is turned on. The manual states that this fuse is for "Reverse Lamps, indicators, bake pad wear, lighting for heating controls and headlamp adjuster switch".

Now, however, the engine won’t start with this fuse blown. The starter motor does turn OK and the pre-heater light on the dash panel lights up and goes off, as normal, but the engine just won’t fire.

Any ideas?

My thoughts are that there must be a short somewhere between the circuit of the fuse and the circuit of the engine management system. But where do I start? Obviously, the first thing I want to do it to get the thing started and drive it to the garage, to avoid having to get out a recovery vehicle.

My first look would be at the wiring around the disc pads, as this is closest to the road and could have got disturbed in some way.

Now before any one comes back sayin o no, another suggestion. The boxers are known to have had dicky engine to chassis earths which cause all sorts of problems with the electrics, suggest you check that

Am working in ours today so if I see/think of anything will come back to you

Thanks dodger.

I'll check out the wiring to the disc pads this evening. What you say makes sence because the red light to indicate the parking brake isn't lit up on the dash. This may be where the short is. It may also explain why the engine won't start as maybe the engine thinks it's already running.

For it to short out while I was driving suggests an action (like applying the brake) caused the problem.

Cheers
Drifter

Hello Drifter

I had almost the same problem on a new to me MH - Peugeot Compass. My problems started with in an hour of collection following PDI.

The fuses started to go when I had reversed into a side street to ask directions and I stopped the engine. The engine would not restart. I checked the fuses and discovered two had blown - like you a 10amp and further along the fuse box towards the steering wheel, if I remember correctly a 15 or 20amp. It was the latter fuse which was preventing the engine from starting.

Now the cause of my problem was the reverse light switch wiring which goes through some sort of channel underneath the vehicle between the fuse box and the lights. The wiring was rubbed through causing a short. I understood it was between chassis cab and the habitation unit.

If your problem is the same as mine it is a possibility that the wiring is shorting all the time and blowing the 10amp fuse. Could be the angle of the vehicle on your drive. Will the vehicle start without the fuse.
