We've towed a Fiat Seicento for the last three years. Really cheap to buy and insure. 20k driven miles; 10k towed miles. Zero problems.

How about towing a motorcycle? Park on the outskirts of town, take the bike into town and park for free!
These people have a (very expensive!) solution - www.easylifter.co.uk
. I'm getting an American version (less than half the price) and I'll let you know how we get on.

What are you towing your small cars with, as we also planned to tow a Fiat Punto with an A Frame, but I have been told that a car is classed as a trailer when being towed by a motorhome, it is unbraked and should not weigh more than 750kg and it is illegal to tow anything beyond this weight limit.

Towing with an 'A' Frame is not accepted as you rightly state, we intend to tow using a braked trailer i.e all wheels off the ground Bateson, Brian James, Ifor Williams and the like.
A Fiat seciento is looking favourite at the moment, because I can fit an inflatable dinghy plus outboard engine in the car Very Happy ..Best of both worlds when arriving at a site with water to play on, and a car to get the essentials from the supermarket!!

Towing a car with an A frame is a well aired and contentious topic in the MH press.

It is probably not legal, but some assume (myself included) that the 'Nelson touch' defence would apply if it came to law. (...turn a blind eye). The problem is that a car on an A frame does not meet all the requirements of a trailer, particularly in respect of what happens when you reverse.

The weight of the towed vehicle is not really an issue because braked A frames are readily available. (Trailers over 750kg have to be braked).

There are also licence implications, but drivers who passed their test before 1 January 1997 are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM.

We have towed our Fiat Seicento on an A frame all over the UK, with no problems. Even though its kerb weight is only 735kg we opted for a braked A frame.

However - I may be persuaded to use a trailer to go to Europe later in the year - the "Nelson touch" defence may not go down too well in France and Spain.
