Hiya
Firstly I have just found to my horror that the cheap ferry crossing bookings only last till approx end of March and the crossing i had quoted for £128 has just gone up to nearly £300.I had a quote with ferry.com but now cannot find anything cheap at all. I wonder if i grovel to some of you lovely lovely kind generous (ok thats enough Laughing )people if anyone would run my details through the caravan club or camping and caravan club to see if it would be worth me joining to get a discount. The motorhome is 6 metres by 3 metres and the dates are 4th August till 20th august (dover/calais) with 3 adults and 1 child ages 10.That leads me onto the next problem...How do you measure your motorhome for the bookings..My motorhome is 5metres 90cms but has a bike rack so is it classed as over 6 metres and again it is just short of 3 metres without ariel but does the ariel mean that it is classed as over 3 metres.Any info or help would be really appreciated from all you kind, generous, good looking, intelligent,(ok I'll stop now) people

P&o cheap fares are supposed to exist on the 2100-0630 group of ferries with 50% discount...try booking direct.

For sizing you could try what we do..put the bikes inside the van at Dover and take them out again at Calais.
If the rack itself is making the van too long can you replace the external fixing bolts with bolts and wing nuts and take the rack off the van for the crossing...I know it's tedious but it is a way of saving money!!!

As for the aerial...take it off unless you have a multi standard TV and really want to view foreign tele!!.

Have you thought of Eurotunnel ? I know it's too late now but if you book before the new year you get great savings and they don't bother about size of van ..it's one price for any size motorhome. In my view it's the only way to go now, no queuing, drive on, drive off..and no seasickness (my wife suffers bad) and a 40 min crossing Very Happy

My van is 5.9m and I have had it queried at Puttgarten (for Denmark), Helsingor (for Sweden across the short crossing), back from Helsinborg, Under the tunnel to Magaroya Island (for North Cape) and finally at the entrance to the complex at North Cape (where we overnighted). So although you may get away with it at Calais The continentals are used to expecting vans to be in excess of 6 mtrs and query it if you claim less. Incidentally the new Oresund bridge from Copenhagen to Sweden only has one rate and that equates to in excess of 6 mtrs regardless of your length

BUT !! the only problem with various posts so far is that you are committing an offence under the Theft Act, namely 'gaining a pecuniary advantage' (bit like deception really), if you are better off financially by telling a little white lie. Wink

Watch out for the CID ! Crying or Very sad
