As a totally enthusiastic amateur I used to own a Plustek 9630 scanner which I bought c1995/6 for about £150 which I thought was expensive, (for me) at the time. I became quite adept at repairing old torn, and scratched photographs for my other hobby of family history. One function which the Plustek had was a 'stitch' facility enabling two images to be seamlessly merged into one, e.g excellent for panoramic landscape views. Unfortunately the Plustek developed a fault and I ditched it and bought a new scanner (Epson Perfection 2580). I obviously didn't give enough attention to detail as it doesn't perform as well as the Plustek and has no stitch facility. Can anyone advise me of any inexpensive software which would allow me to do this again?

I've got some Canon software somewhere that does this.

I'll dig it out tonight and you can have a copy.

Adobe Photoshop, anything from basic Elements to advanced CS2, there are some free trail down loads of others if you do a Google search.
Adobe also has clone tool,healing brush, levels and many other usefull tools for restoring old pics.

Hi if you look at my photos, there's a panorama of one of the shows, this picture below shows the distortion you get, the road is straight, all done in elements, very simple.

And can you see the angled line against the pub, that's where two of the images were stitched together, if you are clever and patient enough, you could air brush this out. I am not either Laughing

Thanks peedee and olley for your pics. I just miss having the features of my old scanner compared to the the one I have now. I could literally sit for hours enhancing and repairing photos and that's probably why I'll need Mr Magoo glasses in the not too distant future.

some tips when taking pictures for stitching without a tripod:

(1) set exposure to manual, otherwise each shot will be exposed slightly differently and this will make it harder to disguise the joins

(2) don't use a wide angle setting as the distortion also stops the joins lining up

(3) stand so that you're framing the LAST shot, then twist to get the first one and work back round

(4) it's useful to line up the marks on your viewfinder with the horizon, when you can see it!

I'm surprised you're disappointed with the Epson, I've got a perfection 2480 and am really pleased with the quality, better than my old 'Black Widow'! - wonder if there's a fault with it?
