Waffle is a sign of lack of knowledge in my opinion. Unfortunately, those not so well informed may be easily led.
Russell
That is so true Russell.
We have been looking at new m/homes at some of the shows recently and have been surprised at the lack of knowledge displayed by some of the salesmen.
Some of them looked like they were not long out of school and it was quite obvious they had no practical motorhome experience.Basic questions that they should know parrot fashion, like overall length, bhp and has it got a spare wheel were met with a blank look and they had to consult the brochure.
At the risk of sounding conceited,I knew a lot more than them about motorhomes, which is understandable considering the amount of time I spend on here.
On the other hand there were a few excellent salesmen that were obvious motorhomers and answered all my questions and more, even explaining the negative points.I am much more likely to buy from an experienced salesman like this, having said all that,we still have our reliable old Dora on the drive.

My staff are well trained, polite, have an understanding of our products as we use them!
on the sales side there is Geoff and James both motorhome owners and regular users, Lyn and myself so a lot of experience between us.
Last year at the NEC talking to a couple who asked us about satellite reception in Morocco! They had been told that they would get Freesat in Africa!
We spent ages politely explaining they were misinformed, We gave them pictures from the official Astra website, we explained what there options were, we even gave them hot chocolate and biccies
How did this end? The lady who was convinced that she needed (from memory Hollyoaks) told us that they were going to order from the other firm, the ones that have the domes that work in Africa (AKA the bloody liars)
We could have put trained monkeys on the stand!
Just a slight insight to the other side of the counter

I think most people posting were thinking of staff selling MHs rather than equipment.
The influence of commission on a GBP 40,000 MH may have a much greater influence on staff behaviour.
Geoff
I am not so sure, one of my sons works for a motorhome dealer and the commission the sales staff get is not great.
Most of the time on the forums people say I was going to buy from ABC but XYZ was £500 cheaper. I rarely read that although XYZ was £500 cheaper I actually bought form ABC as the staff were knowledgeable!
Perhaps the savings come but employing numpties and not paying to train them!
Just a thought? We used to be the South West suppliers of Benimar motorhomes so have some insight into that part of the industry.
I thought the motor industry (including MH`s) through regulations had been forced down the salaried route, probably with a much smaller (if any) commission element.
If that is the case they will no doubt use `targets` to drive productivity. So once the montsh target is met, everything slows to a crawl because we all know what happens if you meet your targets too easily.
