Just been on Medion site with a view to buying street level maps of France and of Italy at £69.99 each. They are also showing what they describe as street level maps of Eastern/Western Europe for £104.99. Does anyone know if you get the same detail as on the individual disc for each country at £69.99 each? It seems too good to be true.

Cannot be absolutely sure about this offer, but I recently bought a medion which came with full european maps, £200 for the satnav including the maps, so it may be the same discs.

As far as I can see, for the major countries (so far I have looked at france, germany and switzerland) they are full street level. I also notice that for some other countries (eg slovenia) they are main road only. But to be fair Slovenia was not listed in the list of countries anyway, so main roads were a bonus.

So I cannot be certain but on my experience its probably what it says! Only slight word of warning is that the UK maps are not quite as up to date as a friends TomTom.

Tell me about it! Mine sure didn't know about new roads in Essex a few weeks back! Laughing
Of course, being a fully qualified prat, I didn't have my map with me! It was interesting to say the least! Laughing

Must say, I love the Medion. Easy to use & remains stable. The contectors are a little delicate but as a PDA bit of kit, up & running for less than £150, it comes recommended. Cool

Thanks for that. Now can I ask for more indulgence. I thought the major roads of Europe were pre-installed. We have got a 1GB sd card. To install from disc to sd card do I just slot both into my pc and ......what then? We're off to France/Italy on 3rd June so I'm going to have to bite the bullet on this soon.

Mary

If you load the CD and the SD card and open both up via Explorer or My Computer - it's just a case of drag and drop, from CD to SD Card.

I did the same before our trip to Italy at Easter, and am very pleased with the result. The only issue is you have to plan trips within Countries.
ie it will not plot from Home in UK all the way to Italy. I had to select Country and work between two points within the map selected, and you have to reboot between maps. But that said it was brilliant!

Just had the chance to test my Medion in France for the first time...apart from the odd new roundabout on the outskirts of a couple of towns it was brilliant...Took me to reception at the Maison Laffitte campsite in Paris.

And it's an MP3 player
And it's got handwriting recognition technology (needs patience)
And Word and Excel and everything
And it doesn't need an exterior anteni, antenae, ant.....Aerial. Despite the overcab.

Worth the initial effort of understanding how it works

Mary

I presume you have set up the 'ActiveSync' software ahead of the drag and drop process described by David

I must say I think this is an excellent device, and extremely good value withn the full european maps.

That said, one disappointment was that it was not so good for walks. the software is designed for roads, you cannot put in a grid ref for example.

So, I have now bought memorymaps, for the PC and for download to the medion. - for £50 for the N or england at 50000:1 and the whole UK at 250000:1. Since there are about 36 maps in the N of england at over £6 each on paper I think it is pretty good value. And my Medion now runs memorymap for walking and the standard stuff for driving - Brilliant!

Jeff

What kind of battery life do you get from it when using it for walking?

Oldskool,

Last Saturday we went on a walk that took 3 hours. The battery was still over 60% full at the end. That said, I did not leave it on solidly, I switched off before sections of the walk in which I didn't need it. If you just switch off at the switch (ie do not exit the software) it comes straight back to where you were, and the satnav only takes a few seconds to reposition itself. All the stats (your track, timings etc) are pretty much retained.

I think on solidly it's meant to last 4 hours.

I found it excellent in use - we retraced a walk that last time we had walked with paper maps, and at one point missed the footpath because we could not pinpoint exactly where we were - no problem with the satnav!
