Went and visited a dealer over the weekend that deals only with Hymers and Westphalia (nice people and know the business - I believe they are from Germany so they are probably in a very good position to import).

Anyway saw a Hymer that clicked and is the type we have been searching for. Now the wavering - the dealer offers a package of 1 yrs european warranty with unlimited claims up to 1000 pounds per claim, 12 months MOT, new cambelt fitted with an RAC warranty, plus 6 months road tax, UK or european headlights and the speedo changed to UK MPH - also suitable LPG fittings. Obviously fully valeted and serviced on handover.

Now this seems pretty comprehensive and the dealer was one of the best I have visited in terms of presentation and standard of models available - also they offer to fit any additional extras required at Trade prices.

This obviously gives peace of mind and little effort on my part. The difference between the model seen and similar in Germany was 3000 pounds.

Peace of minds says dealer as 25 minutes down the motorway and on hand if problems ever arose - with the package I dont think I could do much better elsewhere.

Based on this is there any advantage in purchasing in Germany apart from the price issue?

Comments appreciated as always.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

I know the dealer you are refering to (and since you didn't mention their name, I won't either). They are well regarded within the MH fraternity.

Let's estimate that it will cost you a minimum of £500 to import your MH from Germany and register in the UK.

So maximum net saving is £2500.

So the question should be:

Is warranty, MOT, cambelt, road tax, UK headlights and speedo and UK LPG fittings worth £2500? - probably not in financial terms.

Is peace of mind and zero agro worth £2500? - Possibly, in sleeping easy terms.

Decisions, decisions

Good luck.

Knew this was never going to be easy - devil and the deep blue sea options!!!

Well was always one for jumping in the deep end.

Now I am supposedly maturing nicely and and should have some semblence of common sense, still only got a tent and addicted to the idea of a Motorhome and doing some serious travel!

£2500 would cover at least a few months travel................... Confused

OK back to the web sites - can always hold our well respected dealer in reserve. Both wife and I were impressed and he is top of the league at present and to be honest if it is the same people they deserve the accolade.

Why not go to the dealer - tell them you can save £3000 by buying in Germany and suggest they meet you halfway ?

They could put £1500 ish of extras on your van at no charge and you'll buy from them ?

Hi Exileddragon,
I also know the dealer you refer to as I bought my Hymer B534 from them in January last year with exactly the same terms. I can only say that I have found them very good to deal with and am extremely pleased with the vehicle 23000kms later. I actually have a daughter who lives in Germany and considered the other option but because I'm not very mechanically minded I opted for the more comfortable deal for me .
