Hi everyone.
I have an 18 month old fiat ducato Dethleff motorhome with just 8K miles. It has never let me done unitl this weekend. It starts from cold no problem, but if warm will not start. I had to wait 3 time for >45 mins for it to cool down and then it would start. Any suggestions? |

Your probably going to end up taking it to either base chassis dealer (Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen etc) or a diesel specialist. If they know what they are doing it shouldn’t take much sorting.
I’m assuming your engine is diesel
Problems it may be;
Heater plug control relay which monitors the engines temperature to know how long to run the heater plugs before extinguishing the indicator lamp on the dash. As a temporary fix, try turning the ignition on, letting the heater lamp go out the do the same cycle again to see if it will start.
Another problem may be the fuel cut off solenoid may be sticking when hot. On the injector pump there is a wire which goes to the one end (right hand side), this opens the solenoid to allow fuel through to allow the engine to run. I would be temped to wrap a wet cold rag around the end to cool it down. Don’t go pouring water over the main engine as that can cause serious problems.
Before going to anyone, do try to get some concise symptoms of your problem, the more you tell them the quicker they can diagnose the problem for you. You need to note if the heater light comes on and how long for when cold and again when hot, does the engine sound as if its starting, is there any smoke from the exhaust and its colour, how fast the engine turns over when cold and hot, did the rag make any difference, the engine temperature, whether it’s a full moon, no no just joking
You haven’t given a location so can’t advise where to take it, is it still under warranty, if so back to the dealer.
Please get back to us, so we can all benefit from the knowledge, or even if you have any further questions

Thanks Steve, I had a mechanic come out who ran the enginer for over an hour and sods law it started everytime. He also suspects the fuel solenoid cut off valve. So I have to wait for it to fail again which I suspect wont be long. I am in Portsmouth. Perry's in Portsmouth used to service Fiat trucks but now I have to go to Southampton.
Unitl the next time. When I find out what the cure is I will certainly let you know.

Tommo
Have you checked to see if your immobiliser light is going out when it won’t start?(Key Symbol)
If you don’t have a regular garage I can recommend Essanjay Motorhomes in Poole (not much further down the road). Phone 01202 683608, Steve and very helpful

Tommo,
I have no idea how mechanical you are, but it may be worth checking the cost of a new fuel cut off solenoid before booking a diesel specialist and swapping it yourself.
If it's under a tenner and not too complicated it may be worth the gamble.
Only if it's a direct swap and no settings to mess with though.
I have just booked a diesel specialist for a problem I have with burning oil / diesel and have been quoted £50 per hour. (but they are suppost to be the best in the area)
I am getting withdrawal symptoms (not been out since Monday ) as I want to limit any damage if it's piston rings.
Clouds of blue / grey smoke all of a sudden for 5 miles getting home and then a barly noticable smell after 5 or 6 miles if reved up?
As Steve suggested I will report back after Friday. It may help someone else.

Hi Tommo and all newish 2L jtd powered van owners.
If you can't get the engine to start because the immobiliser ( padlock symbol) stays on then you are in trouble. The AA man will not be able to start it even if he gets the key CODE numbers. The only solution is a low loader recovery to the main dealer to have the code entered with their diagnostic equipment.
So be careful if you have a flat battery. Use only a good 12volt external battery or power supply.Don't keep trying to start if there is not enough power to turn the engine normally, don't use a supply with a high booster voltage. The vehicle immobiliser will assume that you are up to no good ! As you may have guessed, it happened to me.

Well I finally relented after the bloody thing failed for the third time and took it to a Fiat dealership. They have determined that I have to have a new fuel injector assembly at>£300 + labour.
Not bad for a newish van with only 8K miles on the clock.
Plus now awaiting the parts from our Italian friends.
No motorhoming this bank holiday weekend.
Not a happy bunny. |

| Just to let you know after 5 months we finally have solved the failure to re-start when hot. We have 3 new high pressure fuel pumps, 2 low pressure fuel pumps, relays, sensors you name it we had it changed. Mechanics today are swap it cowboys. Anyway the problem turned out to be leaky fuel injector. Problem completely solved. The only way they found it was to send signals down a telephone wire to the main fiat techies. |
