An article copied from the web about the relative costs of liquids and printer inks.
Food for thought:
(Prices are a bit out of date but it clearly demonstartes the point)
Type of liquid........Cost per litre
Tap water.............0.06p
Tesco Value Cola.......7p
Coca-Cola................64p
Volvic mineral water..70p
Petrol..................... 94p
Carling lager.......... £2.67
Smirnoff Vodka.......£14.99
Black printer ink.....£156.25 (Generic)
Epson black printer ink..£875
Colour HP Cartridge costs £29
This works out at £1.70 per millilitre
1985 Dom Perignon costs 23p per millilitre

I find the Dom Perignon works fine for sepia prints.

| Hi, while we are the topic of printer inks, either Poundland or the 99p store had packs containing 2 small bottles of either Black, Magenta, etc etc which i would think each one would fill most normal cartridges ? |

Hi Jim,
The problem is you can't write with Dom Perignon. A good Medoc or a St Emillion is better, nice plummy red, looks like you've written it in blood. It would be cheaper in blood.
Ink, diesil and bottled water prices are three of my hobby horses, even worse rip offs than ice cream, pizza and toothpaste.
Ink, some printer inks cost in the region of £8,200 per gallon, which is worse than diesil, which was a waste product of oil. As to bottle water, well, it falls out the sky for free. No R&D involved, no drilling in the North Sea and risking life and limb.
Now, if I was a cynical water company, I would have ask myself the question, should I put chlorine, (bleach) in the water to "protect" the public, even if it effects the taste? Should I include flouride to "protect" their teeth and bones? I know, if they don't like it, I can sell them bottled water, give them "more choice". Then it's up to them.
You can live without ink, unless you're an octopus, you can live without oil, though now it would be hell to give up all the comforts, but you cannot live without water, Thank God for the World Water Council who have promised that everybody on the planet should have "affordable water".
Just a few thoughts as i wait for the thunderstorms to settle,
Willie |

The thinking behind all this is the printer manufacturers realised that ink was bought regularly and so sell their printers, sometimes at a loss because they want the ink business. That is why their guarantees are invalid if you use other inks.
Lexmark did a good one about a year ago on a cheap printer.
Cost of Printer £32.00
Cost of a set of inks £35.
Moral, buy a new printer each time you run out of ink. |

Pusser,
Unfortunately new printers mostly come with partially filled cartridges. Not silly, are they?
I use JetTec cartridges for my Epson, which seem good value. Invariably BOGOF offers.

Hi Pusser,
Lexmark ain't daft, the print head is on the cartridge not the printer, which is why the printer is so cheap and the cartridge so dear.
You can use kit refills, but they are messy and have a limited number of times you can fill them, normally around three.

In a nutshell no. Only using cheaper and inferior inks can you save money. While the quality should be OK, it is arguable how long your printed off photos will stay looking good. Not long with some. |
