sorry hugo you will have to join something, as is mentioned somewhere else, the card includes liability insurance, and is 'I suppose; a mark of your respectability ie you belong to a recognised club and are assumed to be responsible etc
"FICC Camping Card International
Membership also allows you to obtain the FICC Camping Card International provided by the Club for a small fee and is proof to all site operators abroad that the holder and their family are covered by insurance in excess of a million pounds against third party risks. Only four other British Clubs are authorised to issue the Camping Card International to their members. This is an important facility when travelling abroad"

I think you can add the AA to that list too. I didn't think you had to be a member as long as you take European breakdown cover with them. Is that not the case with the clubs? To qualify you take out some kind of continental cover with them. e,g. I think I have read you do not have to be a CC member to take out the CC's Red Penant Insurance, the carnet comes as part of that insurance and is usually valid for a year whereas the insurance is for the duration you state.

Hugo, The C&CC 'Carefree' Brochure offers fantastic deals on Euro travel and Hols, also the joining fee is easily recovered in savings when booking sites through them.

A benefit not yet mentioned with C & CC is the breakdown cover etc available for the LARGER motorhome. They offer cover via RAC which cannot be obtained direct (with the RAC), the cover (recovery) normally available from both RAC and the AA stops at around 6 metres. I have in the past tried to find out why this is the case but to no avail.

I think it's to do with the size of vehicle their tow trucks are allowed to handle.
I also think that the AA have stopped issuing the carnet, [last year], tho they may have started again -
