For any one mobile, which should include this comunity, If you have a laptop I regard the Kensinton WiFi finder essential to see what networks you can access. Legaly of course, rather than hacking in. Many cafe's some Texaco garages already offer the facility for customers. Bear in mind by 2010 the predictions are that we will have 100Mbit WiFi fed with 1000Mbit links so WiFi will be a very usefull comunications technoligy.

I am still really supprised more Caravan sites dont offer WiFi facilitys.

The technical name for WiFi is 802.11 there are various flavours of it a,b and g being most comon. The g variant is faster than b.

In our small village there a a few homes that dont configure their wireless systems well and are accesable to uninvited guests so if you have WiFi at lease put in a username and password to keep your system safe. Also if you have it use WEP which can prevent the hacker if they haunt your neighbour hood.

Important before you all rush out to utilise someone elses WiFi broadband connection be warned:

WiFi consists of two devices.Oneplugs into a laptop and the other plugs into a desk top PC.
The desk top connects to the internet via broadband.The device at the desk top acts as a two way broadcast and receiver device and 'speaks' to the laptop sometimes up to 500mtrs away.
Here is how I use it. I switch on my laptop with the device pulgged in it seeks for and identifies the master in the vicinity. I connect to it and hey presto I am on the internet....good Luck Paul

Should anyone not feel thay have a full life to lead or wish to run some extended or clandestine WiFi networks, say one motor home to another motor home (stationary) of course. Well I say than but some bright spark will no doubt try to get this to work on the move too. There are some interesting WiFi ariel technoligies here.

I am reliably told someone has this working with the 'pringle tin' variant of ariel from one side of the Severn estuary to the other. The web site above says over 10 miles is possible !!!!
