Safeguard are so helpful even though they couldn’t cover me.
I’ve just bought a new panel van ready for conversion later this month. Budget gave me a quote of £248 to cover the new van, but then didn’t want to know when I asked what it would cost once the professional conversion had been done. Said they couldn’t do it as they didn’t insure motor homes! Must have been the van only department.
I hoped I could have a policy to insure it as a basic panel van, & then when it’s converted it would be covered as a Motorhome with the now higher Motorhome value, but it seemed it was not possible with the same insurer, I would have to cancel the policy & pay all the penalties insurance companies impose for early cancellation then take out a whole new policy. I could suddenly see my insurance costs rocketing, opening and closing policies for just a few weeks.
So I tried Safeguard as they get so many good recommendations on MHF.
They advised me they don’t do cover for both pre and post conversion, but said they knew a company that specialised in this sort of cover, Shield. I thanked the agent at Safeguard and he (doing his job very efficiently) suggested I contact them in a year’s time when policy comes up for renewal. I don’t expect insurer’s to recommend their competitors, but I was very grateful, and of course I made sure I told Shield that Safeguard had passed me on to them.
Happy news Shield will give me cover for the new van and allow up to 90 days to get the conversion done, £262 including protected no claims but with a higher excess to cover the higher vehicle value.
Insurance, it’s all a mystery to me! Thanks Safeguard (& Shield for a sensible price)
Hope this is of help to someone.

Hi Mark
That's a very interesting post - I had never even thought about a vehicle "going through the change" and the insurance complications. I am sure someine reading your info will benefit.
