hi caroline ,cant give you any advice really ,but just wanted to say we are going to go american ,so much bigger and they seem to be more geared up for going full time,we are selling our house to fund a new life in the french alps ,and our home will be somesort of american rv,we have been looking into it and are debating going to usa and bringing one back ourselves ,it would be easier to buy here but,we have looked at many used rvs and if you go get it yourslf its so much cheaper ,for a 10year old rv in this country ,you can get a 2 year old beauty for less so we might well give it a shot, ill let you know when we sell the house and what we buy and where, good luck on your hunting ,,if your buying in this country ,dudleys american motorhomes a good site and there is an uk based american rv magazine you can order online

If you buy in the States, don't forget the hidden costs e.g. shipping to Europe, conversion of electrics fron 120V to 240V, conversion of gas system etc. Also, I know someone who had a Winnebago which did 8mpg overall!

From the replies to the post I gather some of you may have quite a lot more detail on what's UK/EC legal (width? height? length? slideouts?) and what's not. I wonder if you could share any advice you have as to what cannot be UK or EC registered if imported - and what you have to do to convert a US spec RV. For example are the normal black and gray water tanks permissible in Europe? - Do you have to change to a 220V system or can you simply plug in a safety isolating transformer 220V > 110v (such as can be found at Machine Mart etc. sold as Site Isolating Transformers)? Can the existing propane system be used or are completely new tanks needed?
Any help gratefully received as I plan to buy a 30ft+ Diesel rig in the US -tour there - and then and bring it to Europe for semi-permanent travelling!

Hi Caroline
You should only consider buying a slideout motorhome as this will always be in the most demand later if you want to sell. Also petrol converted to run on lpg is more sought after than diesel
