Hi

Am very new and would welcome advice about the legal and other implications on parking up overnight. Are lay-bys OK, service stations, commons and other off-road parking areas?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also is there a book I should be reading which contains items like these and other issues.

This subject comes up for debate on a regular basis so there should be lots of info in previous posts about it. You could probably pick up many tips if you use the search facility on site and then copy the bits that help you.

Wurz is right Alanmos do a search its a common thread but to sum it up :

Pick a quiet spot away from traffic and buildings, dont block entrances (That overgrown farm gate is used once a year and it just so happens youve picked that day). If there is alot of litter around its probably the local youth gathering spot so avoid. The police have far better things to do and thousands of lorry drivers do it every night so if you look like you have a home to go back too (Not new age travellers) they will leave you alone. If there is a 'No Camping' sign - THAT MEANS YOU! so dont.
As for drinking - well you shouldnt but I have never known of anyone actually being prosecuted for wild camping. It is primerally a country passtime so the chances of a policecar driving up a small counrty lane, turning into a wooded parking spot and actually wanting to know what a campercan is doing there is pretty slim. Think of the paper work when they get back to the station just to find out the bleedin' obvious!!
There is an element of risk involved but thats part of the fun.
