Interesting results so far .. thanks to all who participated,
65% are either doing it now, in the future or thinking about it !

We have 6 fulltimers who voted, I guess that number is much higher as many fulltimers won't have access to the net..

16 voted 'in the near future' which surprised me, more than I would have thought,

5 who are thinking about it and 2 when they retire... at this rate the housing shortage will be resolved without building any new homes.. Wink

8 have unwilling partners... Crying or Very sad

6 thought it a mad idea but none gave their reasons .. any volunteers ?

Greetings,

We have looked at full timing, but not convinced yet, we need to get around more then have a break away for a few months before any decision is made.

We would not sell the house though, if full timing was an option we would be inclined to rent the house off on short term leases so that if we need to we can return to our own home.

Hi all,

Good poll, Jim. I am very strong on the notion of fulltiming. My was until recently then got cold feet. I'd go tomorrow. However, what I'd like to know is how many of you know where you are going when "you're off", so to speak? Spain seems the popular choice, but I can see Detourer's worries increasing here as the MHsluice gates open at Dover and they all go down the pipe to Spain.

So, what other exotic places have you all in mind? What wonders of the world are you driven to see/ What mountains, deserts and exploits of freedom do you hope for? Or is it a case of just sitting down the common with no more council tax bills?

Hi Jim,

yep, ditched the Mezan for something bigger, one more room to decorate before putting the house on the market, once sold we are off! (I woun't hold my breaeth though - next door has been on the market for over 2 years). Until then we will be going '50%ing'.

Everyone thinks we are mad - or have fallen on hard times

Cheers

John

Hi Willie

Certainly not sitting down the common .. Laughing Laughing Laughing

First and foremost in our mind is educating Charlotte.. I want to show her what life is really all about, to see places and peoples, to experience other customs and cultures, to visit famous galleries and museums, to walk in the forest, to climb a mountain, sleep under the stars, experience a desert and know that fish doesn't come in boxes covered in breadcrumbs shaped like fingers.,
To fish, hunt and discover the natural world.. to learn the value of friendship and the value of money and that life isn't about what we have or own but what we can put into it.. riches cannot be bought nor do they bring happiness.. bring her up to worship not at the temple of consumerism but the temple of friendship and love.. that is my ethos and I want to impart this to Chaz.. Her classroom will be the RV, the beach, the mountainside, wherever we are she will be enriched.. this is my purpose and my duty.. I will not fail her..

Best wishes to you and your family

Jim n Jan

Greetings,

A well constructed post there Jim, I fully understand your sentiments, it would be wonderful to achieve your goals, especial for Charlotte, you make it seem so idyllic.

It could almost persuade me to get up and go!

Hi John..
selling is the hard part, if you don't have an offer in the first couple of months the price is too high.. agents tend to overvalue property and in the final analysis it's only value is what someone is prepared to pay for it..
Our eventual sale price was 18k LESS than the first evaluation.. it took us almost 8 months to get a firm offer.. Now is a good time to get on the market, people want to move before Christmas, we waited until January.. not a good time and things only picked up again after Easter..

Best of luck ... in a mad world only the insane are sane.. only the mad make sense Wink

Hi Jim,

I know why you are doing it, Jim, but I don't know about the others. The curiosity to see the world, all of it, is overpowering. It's not a dream, it's a compunction, un urge that drives you forward. If there were no motorhomes we'd walk. That's why the British turn up everywhere.

I've often wondered though what our reaction would be if somebody in, let's say, Zambia or Thailand, decided after seeing some European motorhome drive past seeing the world, decided that he should do the same. He gets himself the best cart and a few bullocks on the market, loads up his family and sets off to see Oxford, Cambridge, Wigan and anywhere else that he has seen the name of on the telly. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at Dover when he arrives at the customs and explains, "I just thought I'd come and see it for myself, you know, show the wife and kids a few interesting things."

Just a thought, but why not, we've been doing it for centuries.

regards
Willie
