We fitted a standard mirror mount, clamped onto the top rung of the metal ladder at the rear of our Autosleeper coachbuilt and have used screw in antenna for CB, 2 metre and 40metre Ham radio wihout any problems. Probably not perfect but adequate for most people.

When in Cornwall this summer we met up with some Italians touring in convoy they were using CB's and had the antenna clipped onto the bonnets of their vans, looked like they could be removed if necessary especially as one of them was renting.
We have got walkie talkies for the van and the car so if taking both, we can talk to each other without running up phone bills, also handy when parked up, can call the kids back for dinner or find out where they are.

I got round the ground plane problem by bolting a shaped bracket onto the underside of the bonnet hinges, shaped so that it emerges between the bonnet and wing, the cb aerial then bolts onto the bracket,so no need for drilling etc,and easily transferred from van to van,I had a posse of Germans round about the van in portugal last month trying to figure it out,I popped ther bonnet and let them see why we won the war!

I dont use CB but have a similar problem with my amateur aerials. I have a mirror mount on the top step of my ladder on the back of the van. The coax comes down through the back bumper, under the chassis and back in through a grommeted hole in the cab floor.
When I first set this up the VSWR was a bit on the high side so I did two things.
1. Jubilee Clip on the ladder and also on the roof rack then fitted a meaty earth strap between the two which did the trick on the VHF/UHF bands
2. Not the same results on the HF bands though so I fitted another jubilee clip round a PL259 plug/joint under the chassis and run another earth strap to the chassis all seems well.
If this hadnt worked I was going to get some of that adhesive metal tape they used on alarm systems and stick it on the roof connected to roof rack.
I spoke to a guy who sells the artificial ground plane mounts and he didnt rate them that much
Hope this is of some use. Some of the groups/clubs still use CB when rallying or going abroad.
Generally though there really are a load of muppets on though. Mid band is a bit more civilised
