I've just been alerted to the CustomizeGoogle Firefox extension (there is also an IE equivalent). It allows you to control whether you see adds in Google or Gmail and many other useful features.
Read about it

on Wikipedia and use the links if you want to give it a try - it appears to have quite a high user rating.
