Anyone else on Tiscali? Anyone else having problems tonight? Our connection keeps appearing, going fast, and then disappearing.

I managed to get on our neighbours connection for a while, but it's a weak signal.

Hopefully it'll be fixed. Hope it's not our router or summat Crying or Very sad

Hi Gerald,
may be a silly question, but have you got your wireless router connected to the master telephone socket or at a socket in another location.This is the problem that caused mine to do the same.

Also check that you have filters fitted to ALL other phone sockets.... These can cause problems if not installed...

I've had the router installed where it is for ... ooo, about 3 years, I think. Yes, Keith, I have the filters fitted thanks.

I've reset the router, and I've got a connection again. When I logged in, I got "LCP down" or something. Looking around the interweb, it's not an uncommon fault. Sometimes, apparently, it just 'fixes' itself. Sad

It was down a few minutes ago, and I've just reconnected it. Time for bed, I think Rolling Eyes

Doesn't sound to me as thought there is anything wrong with your equipment so perhaps you ought to change the wifi channel on the router as it may be interferred with your neighbour for example, using your microwave oven or mobile, wireless phone etc.

If I don't use my wifi much ie quit 'safari' (internet browser) and 'mail' the signal strength drops after a while. (This is using the crude sig strength indicator on the menu bar of my iMac but confirmed by going into internet connect)

(I have a Netgear DG834G Router and I have my iMac with internal airport card and a canon IP400R wifi printer.)

It also drops when an another wifi router starts up somewhere near me. Would you believe it it just dropped and lo and behold a Belkin54G is transmitting! So one thing would be to look for interference by another router (it that may not be transmitting its SID). I can't remember if your iBook has wifi but I expect similar tools are available in a PC. I use 'interference robustness' if I don't the signal strength drops further.

I expect you are on an ADSL line. Remember that the up speed on that is similar to the speed on dial up. Its only your download speed that is at broadband rates. (see I looked at your other post Smile

You could have a problem with your router. My BT router's RF side died on me but it still worked perfectly using its ethernet connection port. Thats why I haven't thrown it away its gathering dust in the loft one year on!

You could have a combination of problems for example if your phone line to BT has an interference problem or a high resistance connection this may not be bad enought to interfere with the phone or the wired network. However if the wifi connection is weak then combination of problems will result in the rate of data transfer being slowed or stopped completely. You will then get time outs.

My first ever problem on dial up was completely cured by changing the wire from the pole to my house. I think the wire is a mix of copper strands and steel and the cable was frayed. My first problem on broadband was cured by replacing the cable between the distribution box at the bottom of our road to our pole, I was lucky I just got some internet problems some of my neighbours had no line for about 6 weeks! It could also be an ADSL filter that has partially failed, has there been any lightning around?
