These days with 8M and higher broadband speeds it is easy to forget that the upload speed is always (on home systems) a lot slower than download speeds.
I think arrangements at the ISP is going to be the main factor and it is unlikely to be affected by which FTP application you choose.
When BT Internet first brought in their dial-up ISP service they gave "unlimited" web space with some accounts. When you started to FTP files to it you understood how they could afford to give such a fantastic sounding offer. It was soooooo painfully slow to upload - and intermittent to boot - and you had to pay for the phone call while it was uploading. I still keep my account live by dialing up every month - but I have only ever used a tiny fraction of the "unlimited" Webspace.

Have you thought about getting a remote connection to your work PC and doing all the work on that from home? i quite often do this when working at home, it also gives you access to the servers etc to store all your data on.
just a thought to get round the problem.
