In January 2007 Practical Motorhome there is a feature on a device called Invisihield which can be fitted to you motorhome and even if the keys are stolen, unless the Invisishield Fob is held over the hidden sensor for a few seconds to disarm, vehicle cannot be started.

Fitted by RAC In-Car Services -(Auto-Windscreens) cost is £249 one off fee.

Also in same mag, feature on changing to BP Gaslight cylinders.

Well spotted Alan. Quite tempted by that Invisishield idea as I don't really trust the Fiat imobiliser - mine starts whether or not the little yellow light has gone out. Having lost a caravan to thieves, anything that can stop or at least delay a repeat performance with our MH has to be worth it.

As for those BP gas cylinders, the great stumbling block seems to be availability. Yes, there are some perceived advantages in terms of weight saving (pretty minimal) and ability to see how much gas is left (pretty useful), but unless and until we can buy and replace them as easily as the dreaded Calor I just cannot see them catching on.

If you want to test your factory fitted imobilizer and you have a key that that you can seperate the metal blade of the key from the plastic part of the key try and start the vehicle with the metal part keeping the plastic part well away from the ignition switch.

warning mind you dont loose the micro chip out of the key when taking apart. Older vauxhall type keys were notorius for the chip falling out when the key separated.

a lot of modern chiped key imobilizers work in a similar fashion as the chips put into animals to identify them, so if its not the right number it will not start.

I can see potential problems... If that invisishield hits off and many people get it installed, car thieves will just start watching for people starting their cars... it will be a dead give away as someone brushes the keys over a point in the car.

Its just like when car manufacturers started fitting good security... the car thieves adapted and started breaking into houses to steal the keys instead. They will adapt with this system too.

A better idea is some form of fingerprint recognition or similar... no one can start the car other than the owner or approved friends/family then.

It seems that this is the next step right enough. Stopped for motoring offence - police will now be carrying fingerprint readers which can check out if you are who you say you are. If you are not a wanted criminal, your fingerprint record is immedialtely deleted from system - yeah right!!

You can buy stuff from a Coop down in Oxford I think, using your fingerprint in a reader which then removes the money straight from your bank account. If a success, will be rolled out to other Coop stores nationwide.

I think Aston Martin also have this in the new DB9. Other manufacturers will follow suit eventually.

No doubt there will be someone on Ebay flogging fake (or real) multipurpose All-in1 7 fingertips shortly and there will be no-one to point a finger!! Light fingered can take on a whole new meaning.

There's a load of finger related type sayings still to come when you think about it.

From memory the system normally sells for around £100 installed. We don't sell them as there is only a few places in reality that it is practical to install the bits. A well known jounalist bet in a mag £1000 (or thereabouts) that no one would start her motorhome. When she was here for some other work she suggested that she would need to tell us how to start her van. The look on her face was priceless when we told her that the van was already moved into one of the workshops ready! And no, we didn't get the money as she said that we cheated because we already had the keys! But that, we thought was the point?

If any one is interested, we do not sell them so this is not a plug, so don't start yelling at me, but for those that do see some benefit in them there are often offers one with say the RAC or insurers or this Police force or the like for around £100
