I used to work for a component and system wholesaler and retailer.
In the years I worked there I built a couple of thousand systems for individuals and companies in my area.
When I went self employed I carried on building my own servers for a few years but ran out of time so started buying ready mades. I started off buying from PC world for easy convenience and regretted it. 4/5 systems had failures within weeks of buying and the after sales support was rubbish.
I now buy Dells only. Having spent £30,000 with them over the last three years and only had one fault which was repaired within 4 hours I cannot fault them at all. I have recommended them to clients, friends and family all of whom have been extremely happy.
As for upgrading, the only components that are not standard in my desktop systems are the PSU and Mainboard which I don't upgrade anyway. I have installed additional hard drives, Firewire boards, DVD Writers, memory and video cards in them without any issues at all. I have never had a single driver issue except when I tried to install Linux but thats to be expected.
I thinks its the same in any field of business, if you buy "down" to a price you have to expect something to give somewhere.
I have just Bought a Dell Precision M90 with all the top spec gear. This is the first time I have not been 100% happy with a purchase from them. It is only a minor niggle in that the screen doesn't seem as good as my Sony Vaio's screen. But as I use this as a desktop replacement and have 3 docking ports in the locations I use it with proper monitors its not much of an issue to be honest.
Anyway thats my rant.

Glad you have had a good experience especially spending that amount. But in many ways it has underlined my point. Most of the mainboards on work station lower to mid range have onboard graphics and onboard sound, (onboard sound being the norm with most boards now). This means that with only one different mainboard, for the sake of arguement, it will could have different graphics drivers, different sound drivers, different chipset drives, different LAN drivers and possibly different modem drivers if onboard. Multiply this number of drivers with 3 or 4 different mainboards in the same model line up and it is a right giggle trying to download the correct drivers for your machine particularly as very often the manufacturers name on the mainboard has been removed.
And of course there is then the performance issue. One mainboard will produce a different performance to another type so its pot luck on the day when you buy one as to whether or not you have the best of the bunch or the worst.
I think I should add that my oriignal comments were not geared to Dells being unrelaible but what you get inside for your money and as an individual customer, the service that you are likely to get if there is a problem although I don't think I said this although I believe it to be true.
Searching on google for Dell or Dell Hell is interesting although of course it is difficult to search for Dell Happy as happy customers don't write in.
Who makes Dell laptops and others...

late to the party again! But after just answering this very question myself and purchasing a laptop for my own use, may I recommend my choice to the audience......
I bought a HP Pavilion 2000 (14.3 widescreen). Is it the best? Probably not, but it isn't far away and is both a beautiful laptop and beautifully made. Only Sony make better quality laptops.
As a recent ex IT professional I have used been a corporate user of Dell and Lenovo laptops. For corporate use I have no truck with either but neither of them quite had it for home use. The only temptation was Dell's 3 year on-site warranty but their phone support even for us professionals is awful.
HP only offer return to base but I know from using HP support on printers that it is very good so I have no issue with this. Mine was an AMS Turon x2 with 120GB hard disk and 1Gb memory, superb display and functionality but not great battery life but no laptop does these days £599. They also do a 6000 range and 9000 range in the Pavilion, I thoroughly recommend them.
After Pussers recomendation I looked at Acer but for my price range the build quality and overall look was poor in comparison to the HP Pavilion range, though they do perform slightly better, however as I'm stepping up from a P3 500Mhz, performance wasn't an issue!!
