Smiler,
Thanks for the info. I would like to know more and would phone them but as others may be interested, would you please explain how it works.
Does it work on all four sides of the vehicle?
Is there much drilling required?
What distance does it kick in?
How loud is the dog?
Are there other sounds? |

A lttle off topic but I can't resist the chance to tell a story.
If you were wandering along by a lighthouse and it was foggy well you might jump if the fog signal suddenly started up (getting close to how loud Kands would hear it - see previous post) but you would understand.
Well what if it is a sunny day and its a popular tourist attraction but you have to periodically check the signal is working now it would definately make you jump and you might not be so understanding.
So we came up with a warning sent over a tannoy 'bing bong the fog signal is about to sound please move away and protect your ears" or something similar. This was next to the big notices using the international symbols.
The protests we got about the opening 'bing bong' !!! some one suggested that we set a up a third quieter system "ahem we are about to make a loud announcement............."

| Ivys, In reply to your above request, the unit works (the company say generaly)in one direction only, at an angle of 80degrees, there is no drilling needed, unit kicks in at 6mtrs, max bark is 2.6 watts and there are 3 other sounds. The sensor looks like a speaker abt 7.5in high x 6in widex 5in deep it runs on 12v or mains. when intruder is 5 to 6mtrs away the unit barks once or twice, but if within 3 .to 4mtrs the unit will continuously bark. Ibelieve the company will send you specifications before purchase. Ihope this helps Smiler |

The method to make anyone entering the van receive a shock is to wire the energiser to a plus and minus set of wires on a couple of mats....imagine interlaced spread fingers... so a foot would cover live and neutral.
Yes, I know people wear rubber shoes, but if you have touched a fence even when well "wellied", you still get a hell of a tingle, and if you sat on it....
I found a Chinese site selling electric shock seat covers for taxi drivers. If about to be robbed, press remote and passengers get most unpleasant shock in posterior regions diverting their interest from robbery to escape.....
Love it...
As for loud sirens, they would probably do an excellent job if well hidden.
On one occasion when our campervan was broken into in France, our loud alarm went off but the wires were ripped out and no-one other than the thief heard it anyway....and, to be fair, if I hear an alarm going off, I look but am unlikely to investigate much further unless seeing suspicious activity.
Peter. |

Hi Peter
My point about a siren issuing upwards of 130 decibels was not to attract attention mate... If you were inside a vehicle with say 2 sirens going off at that level, all you could think about would be getting out. You would certainly not want to hang around looking for the siren or try ripping out the wires, you would be in some extended degree of discomfort and would wish to leave quickly
It is only a suggestion

Hi
Personally I like the idea of the loud siren. I should think crooks fear getting found out. Equally the discomfort Kands refers to would not please them.
Car alarms going off are ten a penny and people just ignore them but the air horns linked to a motion detector would do the trick.
Personally I would be concerned about attacking anyone with electricity.
Crooks are devious characters and I could imagine them having a field day through the courts with you. They might claim that they were not actually trying to break in but thought there was a child or dog in pain inside the van and were only trying to rescue it.
A judge might then feel that wiring up the van was going over the top and see on the side of the now hero of the hour!

The sonic system sounds good ( no pun intended) and I will try to get a couple of louder sounding alarms.
My new one for our house is noisy if you are in the room with it, but almost inaudible upstairs, and would certainly not make me have to leave.
The suppliers said they are limited by new rules to supply a maximum decibel sounder.
Is this true, or are they simply putting me off?
I have ordered three triple-language exterior signs for the camper van, warning of electric shock.
I will drape a few interesting looking tapes in the cab, visible through the screen, and hope for the best.
The majority seem to feel I would be unwise to actually rig the shock device for real.
Incidentally, the shock does not happen if one touches the exterior of the vehicle.
Obviously one could not park a van with live exterior unless inside a private area.
So the dog can pee in safety.
Incidentally, way back in the early fifties, in a compound at a power station with all those great insulated cable holders sprouting up like pine trees, the Electrical Power Engineer in charge up in the terminal building watched in horror as a newbie in the compound appeared with a power wash hose and started to wash down equipment.
Everyone thought the man would vanish in a horrible puff of smoke, and, believe me, with the sort of current in the National Grid, people literally have vanished when shorted to the system in rare accidents.
They watched in amazement as he sprayed giant insulators and remained unharmed.
Only later, in controlled experiments, did they realize how quickly a jet of water breaks into sections, thus insulating the jet from feeding power back to the source.
Previously they had had to shut down sections to clean them. Afterwards, they could wash them whilst "live" !
That man saved them a fortune....
Moral of the true story is, if you want to pee on a live wire, do it from maximum distance to protect your personality!
Peter. |

Hi Peter
I would recommend you do not make your van look too different from the others otherwise it might attract the crooks attention in the first place.
The other thing is that they might feel challenged to have a go, just for the sake of it!!
