I had a call from the father-in-law last week. He was in Wales, on the way to Ireland in the borrowed motorhome (mine!!). The call was to say that he just put 60 odd litres of diesel in my water tank. As it is an Autohomes Kamper (I'm told they went bust), I can't get a replacement tank and am not sure how to tackle the prob?? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I don't know much but I thought Autohomes is now part of the Explorer group and if I am right ( this could be a first), you could give them a bell. Either way, i would not have thought this an insurmountable problem other than the possibility of patricide.

In order, I'd try George's suggestion first - look here:

Then try Ephesus' suggestion Charles & Son, who carry a lot of Autohomes spares, and who may have an old tank.

Finally, if all else fails, try a new tank (any size/shape) from

This does raise a very important question though:

Why is it that this happens so often? I don't know whether I'm just lucky, but my fuel tank has a familiar fuel locking cap - the type you get on a car - whereas the water tank is located exactly where you would expect the, er, water tank to be located.

I know people come up with their own ways of remembering which are which - stickers on each cap, say - but there's something pathologically wrong with m/h manufacturers if these cock-ups happen with such monotonous regularity.

Car manufacturers recognised years back that a similar problem was occurring with diesel and petrol in cars. Credit to them, they implemented a cross industry standard. Where different sized filler was installed to the vehicles, preventing fillers of the wrong type being installed.
Hopefully, Motorhome manufacturers might do the same……I think not!!!

The manufacturers don't always get it right.

After I retired I used to collect new cars from other dealers for a local Vauxhall agent from time to time.

When we collected there was never more than a thimblefull of fuel in them so first job was to get to a nearby filling station.

Can't remember which fuel is the wide nozzle but I collected a car which required fuel (from a wide nozzle) and found I couldn't get it into the neck of the filler. Had to stick a long screwdriver down to open the flap in order to get enough fuel in to get back to base.

Never did find out what happened to it.

dont know whether it was fate or coincidence but I tried to put unleaded in our diesel van at the weekend. The nozzle wouldn't fit into the tank, and just at that point I remembered I should have been holding the diesel pump!!!
