We spent two weeks touring the Loire in September 2006 and found we did not need to book ahead for any of the sites we stayed on. We are now planning a three week trip around France in the last week of June and first two weeks of July this year. I believe the French school holidays start at the beginning of July and I'm concerned that we will need to book our sites in advance. Can anyone advise?

I still wouldn.t bother booking. It should still not be a problem unless you intend to visit some of the popular coastal areas.

We travelled in France on those dates last year including the south, absolutely no need to book

Enjoy your trip

Hi, Spudley (great name)

It all depends on where you're visiting, and what time you intend to arrive. Some sites in popular places will start to get full by around 6pm. On our French trip in August last year, we didn't book, but then we generally arrived at around 2pm, so we could explore a little of the area before the sun dropped over the yardarm, and liquid refreshment was called for.

I think you'd have to be pretty unlucky not to get a space.

Thanks for your advice guys. I think we'll take the risk and not book ahead. Part of the fun for us is not planning too far in advance and just going where and when the mood takes us.

Spudley, French school holidays kick off end July so you will have no trouble on most sites until then, and even then there will be plenty of sites but maybe not your first choice every time. We're going mid July to after mid August but only booking one site to ensure we get it for the holiday 15th August. They have a fabulous fireworks display and pageant in Benodet, Brittany, that night.
