We are planning our fist trip abroad to France in late june down to the Loire valley. Is it advisable to book sites in advance? Any recommendations for sites in the area would be appreciated with good course fishing as a bonus.

Should have no problems finding sites without booking in June - a good place to go for a first run in France. Good luck Smile

The is camping Municipal le Sabot at Azay le Rideau (Loire)
We enjoyed staying there last year and found it convenient for chateaux, shops, buses and trains etc. The river Indre flows through the site and people were fishing there. Not an expert so don't know if it is coarse fishing though.

We stayed in July and did not book and got a pleasant place on the edge of the site under the trees.
Municipal swimming pool next door ( free to campers) Clean facilities and friendly staff.

Can recommend several places to eat in town - a short walk away.

We toured the Loire valley in late spring 2006. We based at Ile d'Offard at Saumur. A good clean site with pitches by the river looking out to Saumur chateau, With plenty of facilities for the sporting types but quiet enough for idle so and so's like me. It is well placed for visiting a large number of chateaus also the troglodyte dwellings.

Take the opportunity to visit Futuroscope, stay at Parc De Loisir, St Cyr by the lake with a nice beach.

Hi Diabolo,

before July 14th and after August 31st it should not be necessary anywhere in France to pre-book a camp site. And even between these two dates it will mainly be the coastal sites and those close to the major tourist traps that might be overcrowded. Loire valley should be no problem.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Diabolo

I can recommend Camping Chantepie near Saumur. It's a couple of miles from Saumur on a hill overlooking the Loire, beautifully kept. Obviously not that handy for fishing. Saumur is lovely but the Chateau itself was closed for renovations although the grounds were open. Also recommend Ile d'Offard, as posted above.

Enjoy the trip.

I can also recommend the camping municipal at Chinon. Right next to the river just across a bridge from the town centre. Views to the castle on the hill behind the town.
