Hi all,

I know its an old chesnut but I would be interested if anyone has any recent experience of getting sky on the continent. We are spending the winter in Austria hoping to ski (when it snows!) We installed a new sky box and acquired a freesat card from sky. Having installed sky plus at home we have now received a multiroom card. I would be interested if anyone has any experience of the following:

1. Do I have to register the card to my MH digibox?
2. Is the card digibox specific?
3. Can I register using the 08700 sky numbers from Austria?
4. Do they have any way of seeing that I am not connected to a telephone (in contradiction with their terms and conditions)?

regards

Hi cooder,

We have sky multi-room here at home and in answer to your questions.

1.….yes

2.….yes & no, you can change it by telephoning sky, just how you would then get around number 4, I’m not sure.

3.….not sure, I cannot see why not though, unless of course they see that you do not have telephone line connected.

4.… yes, they will let you know and ask you install the telephone line, although this has only happened to me when I had been decorating and forgot to plug in the telephone line, it took them about a month to contact me.

Sky insist on having the telephone connected when on multi-room, they give a discount price and the only thing I think that would happen if the box is not connected to the telephone line, is they will charge the full amount.

Although when I had my letter they did say they it may lead to my disconnection but that is just bluff IMHO…

MHS…Rob Very Happy

I confirm Rob's answers. Used my Sky+ multiroom box in Germany over two weeks away without problem. It usually takes about a month before Sky notice you are not connected to a phone line and you get a letter. They do that by periodically calling your box and if no answer invite you to "re-set your connection" . If you do this just before you go/disconnect then you may get the maximum time before they check again!

1. Press services followed by 4

2. Press the 0,1 then select to display the hidden Installer setup menu.

3. Press 3.

4. Highlight Dialling Prefix.

5. Type or re-type in 1,4,7,0

6. Save the settings.

This will force the box to callback Sky and let them know you were at least connected on the day you left!

Peter.

On a single Sky provided box contract, Plus or otherwise the requirement to have it connected to the telephone lapses after 12 months, on a multiroom contract (£10 per month) the obligation for 2nd box is continuous. You do not get a "phone" call as such but Sky's computer contacts the box direct via the phone line, you can sometimes hear a phone on the same line "ting" quietly as it connects (enough to disturb sleep if a light sleeper in a bedroom!).

Just one thing don't ring sky from Austria they will know where the call comes from and receiving sky channels outside the uk as far as they are concerned is a no. Telephone calls are the only way they know where you are receiving.

I don't have sky + or multi room but have standard sky. I have not had this connected to a phone line for over 5 years - no call or letter.

I did wonder about going to multi room and transferring one box into the motor home permanently as I currently take the one from home. I thought I would leave the other at home. However when I am away I pull the plug on the TV etc if they were to call I would have thought it would be dead.
They cannot tell you to leave it switched on it's your choice.

Sky works fine in Heidelberg, Frieburg and Interlaken , Austria should be ok.

Maxview crank up dish and Panasonic box.

As I said, no obligation after 12 months on a single Sky provided box (no obligation anyway on a non-sky bought box) but if you get/use a second box on multiroom the obligation is on the £10 discounted extra subscription and is continuous. If they cannot periodically contact your multiroom box you will get a warning letter. After all you may have "loaned" it to a neighbour/relative/friend and they are getting the same Sky package as you for only £10 a month! In practice you can take the second multiroom box away for short periods in the van with no problems, or, the first (main) box (after 12 months) for any period. The multiroom contract says it must be in standby and connected to a phone line. If you agree the conditions then yes, they do tell you to keep it powered up!
