Thanks for that Rob,

That was my thinking that I could unplug the ethernet cable from one laptop and then plug it into another one. Yes I can access the internet and web pages ok it just seems to be the email side of things that is a problem after I have plugged the ethernet into another laptop. And generally I do close one computer down before putting ethernet cable into the other one. Why am I doing this Embarassed well not being that computer literate/savvy I thought I would install the modem/CD that came in the box from talktalk and if all worked ok would eventually go wireless. However in the meantime I bought a new laptop and wanted to see if it also worked via the ethernet cable and to set up everything i.e. get all the updates etc (which I have managed to do)

But having the email problems and Talktalk's Assist & Go keep popping up saying there is a problem then letting it go through its self diagnosis and then it comes back as ok or not ok as the case might be. Has kinda put me off trying to go wireless but that would be the ideal.

I have a HUAWEI SmartAX MT882 modem supplied by talktalk.

Android, Andrew:

I have purchased the wireless pack from Talktalk and it comes with a dongle which I assume you only need to install with a pc that isn't wireless enabled.

However my laptop (old one) isn't wireless enabled so would need to install their dongle.

My new laptop, an ACER, is wireless enabled.

Reading through the instructions I'm not sure if I would manage it all and think I might get into trouble so will probably get someone in to do it for me.

I think like Rob the problems re the mail side of things might well be a server issue as all was working ok this morning.

Who are the best people to go with for Broadband?

I can at least get onto the internet and of course MHF which is the main thing.

Thanks again everyone

My opinion on ISP's and all other things for that matter is buy my Gas for the Gas Board my Electricity from the Electricity Board and my Phone from BT. I have so many problems with so called cheep suppliers one bad experience was the electricity when i went with a cheeper supplier the cocked it all up and i could not pay any one any money for electricity for nearly 2 years.

Rant over back to post

As for ISP i use BT as they have not given me any hassle over faults etc customer service may be in India but at least they can comunicate with other BT depts when faults arrise.

Modem wise installing your wireless modem should be simple and no software should be required (like i said it sucks and as you have experinced its not very reliable RE all is working ok when actualy you cannot get to emails) if you plug the WLAN modem in turn it on with all connections made you should be able to configure it via the default gatway address etc explained above.

As for installing the wirless dongle that should be simple by just inserting the CD rom that came with it and installing the driver only. this takes few mins to do max.

i can look up the modem defaults if you want me to?

Again I would agree with Bob. At least with BT it's one point of contact, you don't get a situation where the ISP is telling you it's a problem with the exchange, and BT are telling you it's the ISP.

If you use BT Internet the buck stops with them

Thanks Rob and Andrew,

Yes please Rob if you could give me the modem defaults. Do you need any other info than already mentioned above?

As for ISP I think I should have stayed with BT but a friends daughter went wireless with BT and has been having lots of problems! Anyway I am now contracted to talktalk for 18 months Sad The reason I went with them was because it was a cheap way to do so. This was because being away so often 5 - 6 months of the year I didn't want to pay a lot of money for a service I wasn't using for half the year.

Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.1.1. on the modem

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is admin, and the password is admin. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.

From here i do not know what the settings are as i have had no experince with this modem it will be stadard settings i am sure

to connect to the internet you will require your ISP settings that are a user name and a password that is diffrent to the default one above you will have set these up when you orderd your broadband.

Username = supplied by or set up between you and TT

Password = the same as above

if you want to post pictures of screen shots of the modem interface i may be able to help.

You need to remeber the wireless side of the connection is nothing to do with the broadband so your freind may of had problems with the wireless but it does not mean the BB was not working. I am sure some offer pay as you go broadband but dont quote me.

Thanks Rob for the info.

I have copied it for reference.

Internet hasn't been a real problem only the email and I am sure it is talktalk etc as sometimes its working and sometimes its not! Any way thanks for the info. I will see if I can get somebody to do it for me as at least I have internet access at the moment.

A survey came up today after talktalk's assist and Go came up so I filled that in and complained about the problems.

Hi rob,

Very reassuring Sad

Well, since i have ignored the Talktalk assist & Go things have been better and I seem to get my email!
I couldn't view my latest bill with them so phoned and moaned and stated how unreliable the service was! But at least they must have sorted out the bill viewing as I managed to get it this afternoon.
